Fan Mails to Our Beloved Roger

Reading through the messages that fans have left at Roger's own website (rogerfederer.com) after his semi-final loss against Safin, I couldn't help but feel that Roger is the greatest inspiration tennis has ever seen Not just an inspiration of tennis skills, but an inspiration of life!

Here are some excerpts from fan's messages about his semi-final loss at 2005 Australian Open:

Roger,

I have played tennis since I was 13 and I understand this game a bit. Tennis is my first love. Roger, your game brings me such joy I cant explain it to you. I know that as a grown up man this sounds rather odd. Your game has brought to me laughters and tears. When I see you play sometimes I have goosebumps all over. I love it when you toy with the likes of Roddick and Hewitt.

Roger, its true that you lost an important match. But you have to see beyond that. You have to feel the affect you have on millions of tennis fans. We dont like you just because of your godly game. We love you because of who you are. Roger, you inspire me day in day out.

I feel that you started feeling agitated and frustrated very soon in this match. I think all you had to do was relax and unleash your shots. Marat doesnt have a prayer against your talent. I just feel that because you are becoming so used to beating the top 10 guys in straight sets, that you became frustrated when you lost the 2nd set and then lost your way from then on.

Roger, thank you for being you. I will be your fan for life.

- Muz

Please hold your chin up high. You have really outdone yourself today. You showed courage under fire, amazing fighting, and your total hearts today for us to see. I can not be more proud of you. I myself admit, many times during the course of this match gave up on you, but you kept surprising me by keep fighting till the end. What a heart of champion you have.

Please do not dwell too much on this loss. You will come out stronger than ever and become an even better champion that you already are, from this.

I think it is safe for me to speak on behalf all of your fans, that we can not be more proud of you. We will always love and support you forever.

It was not your best tennis performance, but what was great about the match was your sportsmanship.

You give young tennis players a great role-model in how you handled that defeat. I can't think of too many other players who would have shown as much grace. I remember when you broke Pete Sampras's winning streak at Wimbledon - I think you handled this much better than he did.

No worries - I hope you learned from this so that you can improve for next time, and put this defeat behind you.

We're still proud of you.

I didn't get a chance to watch your live semi-final match because it was not broadcast here in the USA -- I however was saddened by your loss.

I have to commend you on the brilliancy you bring to the court and equally captivating is the tangible humility and dignity off the court.

I say -- Tennis is a MARVEL when Roger Federer is the ACTION. You are a joy to watch.

Look forward to seeing you brushing your strokes on the court again .....

Kudos to you on an extraordinary Aus Open.
I can only imagine your disappointment at your loss to Safin, but there are three slams still to come in 2005. You can now move your focus to Roland Garros and completing your career slam by the extraordinarily young age of 23.
You are the stuff of which legends are made! For three decades I have loved and watched the game; I have total confidence that you will achieve a Grand Slam during your career and exceed Sampras in the record books.
Thanks for your beautiful game, your quiet strength and your distinctive humanity. You are the spirit of the game.

I know it really meant a lot to you to defend a Grand Slam title, and failing to make it must has made you very disappointed. However, essentially it was just a defeat, which is a very common thing to an athlete. So it doesn't matter, Roger.

What is important is you're still the most graceful dancer on the court! Your service is still fluent, your forehand is no less awesome, your backhand is smart all the same!

Your saving 6 match points showed that you deserve the title "King of Tennis". I still believe in you, so please believe in yourself and pull yourself together. I'm waiting for your next winning, which can't be too far away I think.

Keep going, Federer Express! I'm proud to be your fan!

My Dearest Roger,

I choked and burst into tears when I saw the trainer treating your back. It’s so difficult when someone you genuinely care about is hurt and you are on the other side of the world, powerless to comfort them. It’s during these moments that I realize how much I love you Roger, that I would much rather prefer this pain and suffering inflicted upon me than to ever see you hurt.

I was so mad at myself when you lost. I felt so guilty because I knew the awful truth, that I, like so many others, had pushed you to bear the burden of expectation. I promise you, from the bottom of my heart, I never meant to hurt you.

I pray to God for you every night before I go to sleep. I pray that God will offer you guidance and protection, and grant you eternal happiness so that I can always see you smile.

I am so used to you being my source of comfort that I find it difficult to comfort you. Time heals all wounds, Roger. I saw the hurt in your eyes when you lost this match, and I heard the hurt in your voice during the interview. In my heart, I know you’ll be alright. A warrior who goes down fighting to the bitter end is much more of a champion than someone who loses belief and concedes defeat. In my eyes, you will always be a champion because you play from the heart.

Please take care of yourself. God bless you, my hero.

It is only because of the most graceful way you play that has made me love tennis. You are truly an inspiration and are on a class of your own.

Watching your semis last night kept me glued to my seat till the end as always. This is the first time I watched your defeat (Olympics not shown here in the Philippines) and honestly, I am depressed and it left me sleepless all night. Having taped the match on video, I watched it over again and kept on wishing that the table would still turn around. However, after reflecting on the turn of events I know that this happened for a reason. Your talent and personality will carry you through numerous other victories. I look forward to supporting you till the end of your career.
