What is/was your favourite Federer trick shot?

You know the ones I mean - amazing shots like the half-volley he played against Roddick to win the second set of their Wimbledon semi last year, or the curled pass that he hit on matchpoint to win that crucial encounter with Agassi at the TMC. Those were both on big, important points, but my personal favourite was against Blake at the US Open last year.

Federer was two sets to love up, serving in the first game of the third at 15-15, and Blake chip-charged the second serve, got a floating reply and hit a good, high backhand volley towards the sideline. The crowd were already starting to cheer... and then Federer eased across to the ball and hooked it back cross-court over the net at a ridiculous angle. Blake dropped his racket in despair as he watched the ball go past him, and Federer just smiled faintly. That basically summed up the match in microcosm.

The Wit and Wisdom of the Tennis Journalist, Indian Wells 2004

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Wasn't there a sort of trick shot that Rogi did when he played Gaston at the TMCHouston?? Just before he won the point for the game and they did a high-5 at the changeover... must watch it again to verify... I'm sure someone here knows what I'm on about!

The way his opponents come in to the net and hit a hard paced shot to his backhand thinking the got him but then keeping the racquet head in front and with a subtle flick of the wrist guides the ball past them to their utter astonishment.

Yeah I remember that one. It's a dropshot smash. Not sure whether it's a mishit though.

Yes, it could have been a mishit... whatever it was, it made both Rogi and Gaston laugh -- it was cute to see them doing the high-5 tho... a nice mutual gesture!

Love that avatar... I've seen that pic before fr DC and I'm dying to know what Rogi was making a face about!!

Roger played Roddick in Basel, 2002. Roddick goes to the net, smashes a ball to the corner of the baseline, Roger was there and took the ball that bounced high and smashed it back to the court! Roddick had an unbelieving look whilst shaking his head and Roger smiles at him! wahnsinn!

And those impossible short angled forehands from the center of the court,You think he will do an inside out from that position but doesn't) where the angle is so acute. Its the same effect as a way out wide serve in the deuce court that is ridiculously short in the court and tailing away.

Hey, i was thinking about the same shot!! With every other player, I would have called it a lucky mishit, but with Rogi, I just don't know.

Another shot came to mind. Federer was playing Karlovic at Wimbledon. Karlovic was serving, it was a very fast kick serve, but Federer managed a sliced backhand which crossed before Karlovic, who came running towards the net.
It was a great return winner.

17 (yes, yes, yes!) Slams! And counting....

I'm not sure what it's called, i'll call it a drop shot from behind the baseline. It was against agassi at the USO semis, does anyone else know what i'm talking about?

Yeah you hold a slice grip, but your arm in a topspin position... come over the ball, as though topspin still... then under it suddenly... best on clay.

Was it the backhand dropshot and became the play of the day later?

Anway Roger disguised it very well. YOu just don't know whether it's going to be a slice or dropshot untill the ball crossed the court.

Hmm, there are so many to choose from, lol. I'll have to watch some Federer tapes, and then I'll come up with my conclusion.
