The Best Tennis Player of the Open Era

I found an interesting website. To compare the performance of players in different eras, they use some statistical techniques that have been used in chess. Our Rogi is rated as 2nd best player of all time (behind McEnroe ).

I think that this system is quite reasonable and scientific, though there are a few pitfals as they admitted. I posted this in GM.

This article must have been written in Oct. 2004(after USO). Roger's rating at that time was 2440(less than Borg), now 2469(after TMC).

Re: The Best Tennis Player of the Open Era

when roddick outranks Ashe/Safin/Kuerten/Hewitt, you know something is outright dumb about this list

(No offence to you, Soona.)

Re: The Best Tennis Player of the Open Era

I didn't read thoroughly but from what I gathered, it would be more appropriate to call this list the "the best peak players". The author claims to have used a system similar to one used to rank chess players. He says that McEnroe achieved the highest rating ever of 2543(in early '85 following his amazing 84 in which he compiled a 83-3 record), but could only sustain it for 6 months. He maintained a level of 2200 for 11 years.

Roddick must have attained his peak rating of 2334 during his incredible summer run last year (27-1 incl. USO win). I can believe this run topped a lot of more accomplished players like Hewitt and Safin.

If the author had periodically taken these ratings and averaged them out over their career, then those values could have been used to come up with the "best players of the open era". For example, Mac's average rating would have been closer to 2200 (maintained for 11 yrs) than 2500 (maintained only for 6 months.)

Yes, I agree.
