Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

This is embarrassing. I can't believe I never post here before.

I first saw Roger in the 2001 Wimbledon match with Pete. I loved Rafter because of his style of play and I so wanted him to win. I have big soft spot for late bloomers and players who are great singles and doubles players which is why I like Rafter and Kafelnikov the most in the 90s. I was watching the match and saw Roger and thought he looked really cool. He was playing a smooth effective style and I thought he looked like a Ninja out there apart from the pooka shell necklace which added a childish charm to him that I found endearing. I was so happy once he beat Pete. I yelled out " Yes Rafter can win the title now". We all know how that turned out.

I never forgot about Federer and when he played Agassi in the USO 4th rd after missing the whole hardcourt summer due to a groin injury; I was hoping for him to win and Rafter to win so they play each other in the qrts. They both lost but Roger played some cool points in his match that he wasn't seriously into including a great BH volley that he just pranced and danced up to. The crowd made huge "WHEW" remark after he won the point. He also wore all green for the one set (3rd) I think which was cool because he looked like a dragon with that color and his playing style.

My one tennis pal from LA in the fall that year sent me DC match of Roger pounding Jan Michael Gambil from earlier in the year and I watched it over and over again. He was so cool to watch. I followed him ever since and always argued with her and her pals that Roger will pass Hewitt because he is the greatest talent and he cares plus he works very hard. They didn't believe me for a long time but they came around.

Rafter was one my favourite players at that time as well. I feel sorry for him that he never managed to win in Wimbledon.

The final against Ivanisevic was a classic one. I have to confess I was never a fan of Goran, but somehow it suits to him that he got the title in the last days of his career. This final had everything - a great atmosphere, good tennis and fair play. As much as I would have loved to see Patrick holding the trophy one had to congratulate Goran for his achievement and it was touching to see him so happy afterwards.

I still feel badly for Rafter that he didn't win either Wimbledon or DC... but I love the guy!!! I could never watch that Wimby01 again... that damned rain... it's all Henman's fault!

Could you imagine the atmosphere in Wimbledon with Henman in the final?
Everyone in the stadium would have been for him in a final then

Yes, but I think Rafter could have won... oh well, it's all water under the bridge, as they say... it's a shame Rafter never won Wimbledon w his great S&V game...

As I posted many pages ago, it's because of Alex Corretja and Patrick Rafter...

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

I can't remember when I saw Roger playing for the first time. I remember a match against Goran Ivanisevic, it was either London 2000 or Milan 2001. I was a huge fan of Goran but for the first time I didn't mind he lost. I suppose I became fan of Roger that day He was rather immature back then and he giggled a lot. I love Roger for his play and for the way he is. I've said this before but I could never understand people who don't like him, let alone people who hate him. How on earth can someone who likes tennis not like Federer????

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

I saw this young kid playing in the Orange Bowl in I think it was 1998. Most of the kids were obviously playing with as much power as they could and very little fluidity. Then here's this blond kid who played with the most grace I've ever seen in the juniors. Person next to me said, "He's the next great superstar," and everybody agreed. Didn't see much of him for three years, then he beat Sampras at Wimbledon. You know the story from there.

How lovely that you got to see him at that very young age!

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

I don't remember when I started being Roger fan, and also don't remember the first match I watched of him!

I do remember, tho, that during 2004 I didn't care about him at all... and I'm quite sure I watched him beating Baghdatis, but not so sure if I saw him beating Agassi at the USO for example. I think the first match I watched of him was either Agassi or Baghdatis, but I'm not sure at all.

And I completely don't remember when I started following him very closely, like every step. I think it was during 2006....

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

I first noticed Roger in the Australian Open in 2004. I think he stood out in my mind because of his ponytail which made him look funny ... But then I noticed his tennis and I've never looked back. I was actually put off tennis for a couple of years after Sampras and Hingis both retired from the sport. But then Mr Federer here sucked me right back in. And I am proud to say I have never been a bigger tennis fan.

My whole family has always been huge fans of tennis, the first time I saw Roger (and it was live) was at Wimbledon 2001, when he defeated Sampras, since then I've been following the guy
