Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

It all began on a cold and windy night.... 2002 Masters cup in Shanghai, 75 57 75 loss to Hewitt, but for me it was the beginning of my Federermania

Thanks for warm welcome, guys!

Mrs.B, do you speak Korean? I didn't expect someone from Europe to say hello in Korean. What a nice surprise!

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

I first saw Federer playing against Sampras at Wimbledon as it so happens, but I didn't really appreciate him till 2002 in Indian Wells, where he lost to Enqvist. He was beaten fairly quickly, but I still found myself really enjoying his game, and saw in him the potential which he to a large extent made good on in Miami later that year. He cut through the field, but disappointingly let a lot of chances slip in the final. I was hooked on him all the same for the rest of 2002, and was bowled over by his title win in Hamburg, where he played to a level comparable to this whole season. There were many frustrating losses in 2002, but he finally made good in 2003, after which I cooled off somewhat and amn't a fan anymore so much as just someone who likes to watch him play now and again.

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

Nice thread Ron.

It's not often you see some of the very lazy Rogi fans *cough* (they know who they are ) to write such long posts like here you know

For me it's Wimby 2003 SF. One match is all it needs.

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

February 2001. Roger singlehandedly beat American DC team( Sampras and Agassi did not play). That tie was a preview of things to come. His shots were amazing, and he looked very mature, calm and collected. I couldn't believe that the guy was just 19. When Roger clinched a victory for the Swiss team, he fell on his knees and let his emotions out. I've been a fan ever since.

Re: How did you become a Federer fan?

Up until the magical Wim 2003 SF, I was following tennis only casually - just watching late round GS matches - having no real favorite player since Edberg retired. I didn't know much about Roger except for brief mentions by Jon Wertheim as a talented player. In fact, I didn't even know he was the one who ended Sampras's reign at Wimbledon. I had known Roddick from 2002 US Open - I developed an instant dislike for him with all the hype and his clumsy, power game.

So I sat down to watch the 2003 Wim SF to see if the guy playing Roddick could stop him, which I honestly thought was not very likely. As the match unfolded, it was amazing to see the winners flowing from Roger. Even in the close first set, Roger had 24 (!) winners, double Roddick's. Plus, Roger was SV'ing on almost on all first serves, which was so refreshing to see. Then in the last two sets, Roger gave one of the most glorious exhibitions of tennis - the only match I have seen where somebody played such breathtaking tennis was Edberg in 91 USO Final against Courier.

From that day on I got hooked on to Roger and tennis in a big way. I read these forums, tennis ware-house forums, rec.sport.tennis newsgroup, and read every article about him on the web.

I just feel previleged to be witnessing such greatness and rooting for a soon-to-be-a-living legend.
