Plus he'll start with the Abu Dhabi exho.

But that seems very small, surely he will add another tournament in the second half of the year, maybe in Asia? Plus why only the mandatory clay events? He normally does another right? eg. Monte Carlo or Estoril.

A rats

He said he would reduce his schedule so it's not really surprising

I don't know why he doesn't play Monte Carlo anymore considering his results there over the years.

Re: Roger Federer's 2011 Schedule

Not really surprised that Fed doesn't intend on defening his title in Sweden but I'll never forgive him for skipping Monte Carlo this year. In all likelihood he lost his #1 record chase because of it. This schedule + Monte Carlo + Tokyo would have been perfect in my opinion, but then again, who am I to judge?

From the schedule what I think is clear is how Roger wants to build in rest and recuperation periods within his year where he can really put in some hours on the practice court and hone his skills for the big tournaments. Basel is like a mandatory tournament for him. Halle is his chosen warm up for Wimbledon, but he's been known to skip it in the past despite it being on his schedule. The only two other non-mandatory tournaments (Doha and Dubai) seem like easy choices...not because of the $$$ but the fact that most of the other top 10 are there and his absence would not go unnoticed and the fact that he has a training camp based there as well.

He certainly does not seem to be going out of his way to bring his tennis to the "smaller" tournaments like Estoril or Stockholm. But of course his main concern is playing for the ranking (as opposed to playing for a larger number of smaller titles) and that requires big performances in big tournaments. So it's only natural that as he gets older his schedule will be reduced to the minimum.

Re: Roger Federer's 2011 Schedule

Perhaps if he defends his AO title and gives a good showing at IW/Miami, i.e. in with a serious chance to regain the no.1 he'll decide at that point to take a Monte Carlo entry?

Re: Roger Federer's 2011 Schedule

On a slightly different note, I'm not that optimistic about Roger's chances of regaining the #1 rank, especially as Rafa picked up 1000 points in London. The good thing from this tournament is that he has put a bit of distance (+1100points) on Djokovic, which might ease the pressure a little during the Australian Open. I reckon Fed will have to win 2 slams next year to return to number 1. Preferably AO and Wimby...the USO is more of a last resort as the points swing could go either way there with his performances in Canada and Cincy this year. But winning 2 slams especially in this era is a tough ask.

So yeah, I agree with you. If he gets 2500+ points from the AO, Indian Wells and Miami, then I really hope he will consider asking for a wildcard to Monte Carlo so he can rake in some more points before going into the clay and grass season where one hopes he can improve a fair bit from last year. If it becomes clear, however, that the #1 ranking position is out of reach (say if Fed lost before the semis in Melbourne and Rafa reached the finals) then I doubt he will change his schedule.

Re: Roger Federer's 2011 Schedule

It's a good thing he is not playing Estoril. This gives him the chance to play Monaco via a wildcard.

Well post Wimbledon he is about 1500 up on Rafa right? He needs to defend AO really, and could do with Nadal falling as early as possible

It's possible, but It'l be dependant on Rafa not sweeping the clay I feel.

Re: Roger Federer's 2011 Schedule

Hmm I have a feeling this might not be a complete schedule. I could maybe see him taking a WC in Monte Carlo and perhaps adding an event in the fall.
