Smile The Other Swiss Players Thread

Hey, guys--

I just scanned the chat thread (hmm, they seem to be popping up everywhere ) to make sure I wouldn't be duplicating the idea here, but I thought it'd be nice to have a thread somewhere for all of the Swiss players. And what better place than to steal a corner of Rogi's forum? I hope you don't mind

I like Roger, but I like Michel Kratochvil more . . . I mean, not that you could tell from any of the other threads I've posted in, LOL And I don't know much about the other boys (and girls) who play under the Swiss flag.

I'm looking forward to the reports from DC and Basel on all the boys Thanks for volunteering, guys!

HI TH

Well you're welcome to open your swiss topic in here .

So you like to know more about our siwss guys.
Well you know Michel so I don't have to tell you anything about him. You even might know more than I do anyways.

Interresting thing about George Bastel is that he's actually born in the US. Marc Rosset (not really my fave.) still surprises me. Ivo Heuberger needs that one big win for his breakthrough and he's got to look after his shoulder who's bothering him every now and then.

Yves Allegro trains in Germany. His best results he had on grass. (Rosmalen that is.)

I believe also Marco Chiudinelli (he played in Toronto this year - with Roger he was also in the hockey team - he beat Cederic Piolin at the qualies for the US Open but lost in the next round.) trains outside of Switzerland as there aren't many good training centers around here. Only one that comes to mind is the one in Magglingen clouse to Biel. (Yes that's where Roger used to train and sometimes still uses the site when he's in Switzerland.)

Roman Valent hasn't made the step to the big ones yet after he won Wimby as a junior last year. Guess it takes him longer to get back after he had to deal with the "Pfeifferschedrüsenfieber".

When I'm not mistaken Stephan Bohli is training in a center in Paris. Haven't got a clue what Michael Lammer is up to.

Sorry not really much of good info from me.

but still enough for a huge

HOOOOPPPPP SCHWIIIIIZZZZZ!!

Hackie,

Brilliant idea to start one here, quite appropriate really, 'cuz Rogi's a good friend to all the Swiss players. What with the DC happening this weekend in Morocco, we will surely have a lot of things to write about here...

So now i should start stalking Krati here in Bern or at his parent's tennis center and get an autograph or interview for you or something? j/k

and as we are talking about the other Swiss players, the Swiss football boyz would be in this category too. They kicked ass last night in their match against Moscow Spartak. This is Rogi's home team, the FC Basel. But it's a great pleasure to all the Swiss.

FC BASEL OVERPOWER MOSCOW SPARTAK

Hakan Yakin’s goal in the 50th minute put FC Basel on the path to victory in Basel’s debut in the Champions League group stage.

Five minutes later, Julio Hernan Rossi dribbled around the Spartak defence to get a clear shot past 'keeper Alexander Cherchesov.

With the Muscovites missing their injured captain, Yegor Titov, Basel dominated much of the match and had a number of near misses.

First scare

Rossi gave Spartak its first scare in the 15th minute with a header that went into the net past Cherchesov, but the Argentine player was ruled offside.

In the 23rd minute, Murat Yakin headed against the post from a corner. Thirty seconds later his younger brother, Hakan, had his first opportunity, heading the ball just wide of the goal.

Hakan was also on target with a bicycle kick in the 43rd minute, but Cherchesov caught it. And Rossi narrowly missed with a header that bounced off the crossbar in the 70th minute.

Spartak were also forced to cope with the news that Titov faces between one and four months more on the sidelines with a renewed injury to his knee.

Unhappy history

The Russian team have an unhappy history away from home in the Champions League and this was their eighth successive away defeat in the competition.

Last season the Russians were eliminated in the first round of the competition, finishing behind Bayern Munich, Sparta Prague and Feyenoord.

Shock win over Celtic

Basel made sure of their place in the Champions League opening round after shocking Scottish champions Celtic in the qualifiers.

The team came back from a 3-1 deficit after the first leg in Glasgow, to win the second leg 2-0 in Basel.

Entry into the Champions League is likely to give a welcome boost to the FC Basel coffers, which have been hard-stretched in particular by the building of the club’s new stadium.

The Swiss side could earn up to SFr10 million ($6.7 million) – even if they lose all their games – thanks to contributions from the competition organiser, UEFA, along with money from the Champion’s League marketing pool and ticket sales.

If the club continues to upset some of Europe’ biggest sporting names, the financial rewards could be even greater.

LOL, no, you don't have to go through all that trouble. The fact that I don't see him or hear about him much adds to my admiration of him

But, if you want to, far be it from me to stop you

Doris, thanks for the info. I've only even heard of the guys playing for the DC team that you mentioned, nothing about juniors. So you did have some good info When Bastl defeated Sampras at Wimbly, we learned his life story more or less. "Breakfast with Jim Courier" was awkward but interesting.

Welcome TH!

I'm a diehard Rogi fan as you can see -- you can check out my images from TMS Toronto this summer -- there's one of Rogi w Chiudinelli at the hockey game -- so much fun to watch them having fun! [images in Mad... thread]

Also, thanks to Doris for Swiss info -- I have the SMASH mag stuff on the Juniors but it's in GERMAN! [Doris and Mrs. B. are kind enough to indulge me for translations of Swiss articles.]

Thanks to Mrs. B. for FC Basel report!! [my Spanish teams Real Madrid (Juanqui's team) and Valencia (dear to my heart as it's the place where Juanqui is from and where I lived/studied) also won!]

Yep, here we can all cheer for and support the SWISS BOYS!

See you around the boards!

Which issue of Smash, Doris? I saw a small pic of him and thought, hmm... he'll give Rogi a run for his money in the "hot" stakes!
