At this point in the season, it's not so much about defending points as it is about gaining points in order to finish the year #1. I don't think he was thinking about #1 after the AO, but now I think he would like to finish another year at the top of the rankings.
I really hope so. I agree with you, he has a fantastic, rather unexpected chance to indeed be the ONLY player since Ivan Lendl back in the late 1980's to be able to do so. And well, knowing - or rather, thinking we know

But if he doesn't and just allows himself to have some R&R with Mirka and the kids, I won't at all begrudge him for that.
In all, the outlooks for him are fine. MORE than fine, indeed.
