Murray on Fed's side of the draw was NID.

Need ideas for a new signature...

I know you're joking. With Roger and Rafa being the no. 1 and 2 seeds, they both had 50% chance of getting Muzza in their side of the draw . I rather see Roger getting Muzza here than in the AO. (no, no lecturing please, I know - 50% chance, again... )

It might just be me, but unless Roger is fully healthy - no back problems and the like - I have *no doubts AT ALL* that he will beat Muzza if they both manage to reach the semis. People read way too much in that silly Abu Dhabi exho - blimey, Roger was playing with his Rolex on!!! = absolutely in non-serious, exho-mode. And still it took Muzza a TB in the third set to win that match...

Go get 'em, Rogelio!

PS: thanks Alex for starting the thread. Happy 2009 to you!

Happy 2009 to you as well Karin. Murray will be a difficult player from here on out for Federer because his return of serve lets him get into a lot more points than Fed is accustomed to on his own serve. On top of this, Murray has a really good serve and he's served a good % against Federer.

Federer's BH has held up pretty well against Andy in their matches, but he's lacked the explosiveness on his FH except in New York. A few years back, any weak shot hit to Fed's FH would be punished and an opponent's chance of winning the point after hitting a weak shot to Fed's FH was very, very low. Murray hits plenty of weak FH's to FEd's FH, but Fed doesn't crush them like he did 2-3 years ago. If he is connecting on that FH, I think he can pull off a good, tough 4 set win. If it's not, it's going to be very tough to win unless Murray is having one of his 40% serving days.

Thanks Alex!

I don't dispute anything you say, I happen to think that Andy Murray is indeed a great player (I've been saying that since I joined MTF, check it out if you don't believe me ), and he might well be a future ATP #1. Even more, I LIKE the lad - call it a Guilty Pleasure.

And yes, Roger isn't the Roger of, say, two, three years ago anymore. Acknowleding that is just a matter of being *realistic*.

But still - Roger *trashed* Murray at the USO, the last HC GS played. I'm not taking Roger's earlier losses to Muzza into account as I happen to believe he was still suffering from the (after-)effects of his mono-infection at that time (not saying that I dispute the value of Murray's victories, not at all).
Murray's last victory in Shanghai? A very tight, hard-fought three setter, while Roger was obviously very troubled by a severe back injury...

I might well be very wrong, but I reckon that we're going to see a VERY DIFFERENT Roger Federer in Doha - and if not there, at least at the AO - provided that nasty back injury doesn't pop up again, of course.
However much I acknowledge Murray's (and Nadal's, and Djoko's) tennis virtues, I just don't feel willing to play the obvious popular 'Pessimistic About Roger's Chances'-game as of yet.

Love seeing Roger looking rested and tanned. So much better than the pale look he sported most of last year.

Re: ********Qatar ExxonMobil Open**********

Yay Qatar I foresee a good win for Roger here (I'm hoping without dropping a set, because we all know how cool that is).

I don't think Murray will be a problem. A healthy, fit Rogelio on hard courts? Indestructible

ROGER & JANKO & LE MAGICIEN & Stan & A-Rod & Novak & Rafa

Re: ********Qatar ExxonMobil Open**********

I guess we will soon have an own thread discussing the Federer-Murray rivalry, just as there have been some for Roger and Nadal in here

It's a good thing on the one hand that Roger gets to play against the players who he has difficulties against as much as possible in order to analyze them, on the other hand it doesn't really help the selfconfidence to lose very often against a player.

I'm sure Roger is contented that he won the most important match against Murray last season and isn't afraid to play against him, no matter if it is in a best of 3 or best of 5 match.

Though we are heading into an official tournament now we shouldn't forget that it is still early in the season. It will be interesting to see how Roger plays here, if he still tries to test shots.

Let's see what happens when they next play in a meaningful match. The last was an exo. The one before that was a match that was meaningless for Murray. The only match that Andy's won that was "big" was the semis of Madrid, really. If Roger and Andy have a big match at a slam and Andy wins it - well to me that takes it to a new level. The US Open final was quite indicative that when he really needs it, Roger can still bring the big guns. I'm sure there's more twists and turns in their head to head to come.

The Shanghai match wasn't obviously that meaningless for Andy It will indeed be interesting to see more matches between Roger and him at a GS.

How much do you think is the current hype around him pressure for Andy?
