2009 Schedule

I thought that one of the new rules being implemented with the new calender and tournament tiers was that top 10 players would be required to play at least 4 "500" tournaments what awful names. I was looking at the new calender to try at figure out which 500 tournaments Roger would be playing and so far I've come up with Dubai and Basel and I'm not sure which other 500 tournaments Roger will be adding to his schedule. Anyone have any ideas which tournaments Roger will be playing next year and whether it is indeed required for top 10 players to play 4 500 tournaments

Re: 2009 Schedule?

So apparently top 10 players will be required to play four '500' tournaments next year, assuming Roger plays Dubai and Basel anyone have any ideas what the other two will be?

Re: 2009 Schedule?

Halle might be in his list and, I suppose, Estoril -- if he opts to defend his title.

I don't think Halle is a 500 tournament.. is it?
As for estoril, the clay season is crowded and I don't think Estoril is before Monte Carlo, now.. Not sure though
He might play the Tokyo Open or something ..

He'll probably be play Halle again and possibly Estoril but neither of those tournaments are '500' tournaments and with the new rules he needs to play four out of: Rotterdam, Memphis, Acapulco/Dubai (same week), Barcelona, Hamburg, Washington, Beijing/Tokyo (same week), Basel/Valencia (same week). If it wasn't for Hamburg being moves to after Wimbledon, he may have played there as he seems to enjoy playing Hamburg but I don't think he'll be playing a clay tournament after Wimbledon. Ofcourse I could have misunderstood the new rule and it could be that top 10 players aren't required to play four '500' tournaments but that if they play more than 4 only the best four will be counted towards their ranking.

Re: 2009 Schedule?

Roger has already confirmed to play in Halle next year. Here's a look at the current players field :http://www.gerryweber-open.de/en/pla...elerfeld-2009/
Wonder if people on GM will call the tournament a MM event again with players as Tsonga and Djokovic participating

Roger always publishes his schedule on RF.com, so we probably just have to be a little bit patient to find out which tournaments he is going to play in 2009. Unfortunately I can't imagine that he is going to play in Hamburg. As much as he enjoys the tournament he isn't going to play a claycourt tournament after Wimbledon and right before the US hardcourt season.

Re: 2009 Schedule?

Thanks Doris, Guess we will just have to wait until Roger publishes his schedule on rf.com

Are we going there again? I'd like to opt for a full week this time!

Oh, of course it will be called a MM tournament in GM again. I mean, Roger won the title there this year - must be a MM tournament, no?

Re: 2009 Schedule?

Are the 4 500 events required or is that the number of them factored into the player's ranking (like the 5 optionals now)?

I'm not entirely sure, I recall reading that 4 500 events will be required for top 10 players and that there's only a limited number of 250 tournaments top 10 players are allowed to play but I've also seen articles that only mention that the best 4 500 events will count towards the ranking like the 5 optionals now but say nothing about the number of 500 events players are allowed to enter
Edit: I'm fairly certain I had an article stating that top 10 were required to play 4 '500' events but I can't seem to find it anymore so maybe that idea was dropped

Re: 2009 Schedule?

^^ You forgot to mention the Abu Dhabi Cash Cow Invitational, MY. Or has that (hopefully) been abolished?

I guess it wasn't listed on his calendar. I doubt it's been abolished though. And certainly doesn't count towards his ranking.
