Pardon me, but he's playing Halle first...

I'm hoping some of the veterans here will know the answer to this: What was it like for Sampras in his heyday around the time of RG/Wimbledon. Did he always go into Wimbledon as the overwhelming favorite regardless of how he performed at RG and Queens? Didn't he win Queens only once in his career?

I'm ignoring the press right now but I have a strong feeling the suggestion is or will be that Roger is vulnerable and someone else will win Wimbledon this year. I'm just wondering if Sampras had to deal with that shit too?

I'm not exactly a veteran here, but I seem to remember that according to the bookmakers, Sampras was NEVER as big a favourite to win wimby as Roger had been the past few years. I'm pretty sure he had to deal with the same crap from the press, even though the expectations on him were never as big as the ones Roger has to face.

Pete did have to take quite a lot of expectation as well. The whole media/press thing has multiplied greatly even since the Samphras days, so it is much greater for Roger. It's certainly true that any time Pete lost he definitely was finished, down and out and ready for retirement. He took quite a bit of flak as well, but then his relationship with the press was not as good - but as Roger is finding out, that doesn't always count for anything when the wolf pack sense blood! I hope he keeps his head down the next few weeks and doesn't get caught up in any media games - remember when he was about to play Roddick in the Semis of AO in 2007 (after the Kooyong match) and he said he didn't read the papers or look at the TV before it, so he wouldn't get swayed by it all. Hope the same happens here.

Me too. Although apparently the French and Swiss press were floating rumors out there that Roger wasn't himself, was grumpy during RG so if he stays away from the press then they'll read all sorts of things into that and print that to. Roger can't get away from the monster he created.

Sampras was never quite as big of a favorite, but it was close. By the time the 2nd week rolled around, everyone knew that he was going to win no matter what.

Here's the funny thing about Federer taking a lot of heat right about now: Sampras gave up on clay and the French Open after his last run and nobody ever said anything. It was EXPECTED that a great grass player would not do well most of the time on clay. Federer has changed all of that. They expect him to win every single match and win it beautifully. Losses at Queen's and RG had no effect on Sampras at all or expectations of Sampras. He was still considered the best on grass and expected to win it.

Nadal will carry a lot of confidence into Wimby, but all it takes is a set and half for all of that confidence to dissipate.

INdeed. If he reads the press right about now, he'll find out that he's not the greatest, not all that good anymore, not the real #1, etc. etc. I guess the press forgot about Nadal's matches agaisnt Nalbandian, Federer, Youz, Tsonga, Davy on his least favorite surface.
