Please don't scare me...

The post was made at tennis week, over here.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst watching Fed play Hewitt on Wednesday Becker wondered whether or not Fed's huge forehand will cause him long term damage to his wrist. The "tornado" camera, which is like a really slow motion camera(a thousand frames per second), showed the huge amount of pronation on Fed's wrist when he whips that massive forehand. An e-mail was then read out in the studio in which an orthopaedic surgeon said that Fed is risking long term damage to his wrist because of the extreme pressure on his wrist his forehand creates. Is this true? He's been belting that forehand for years now and he's never had any problems injury-wise.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Please don't let it be true.

I am also posting this in the GM to get more opinions.

Re: Please don't scare me...

Don't worry about it, it is not like Roger has begun hitting the forehand like this 1 year ago.
He has been using this stroke for close to 10 years now and I don't think he had any major problems.

Any potential stroke can lead to injury and avoiding injury is usually down to luck and not technique - I don't see anything wrong in Roger's forehand anyway.

Re: Please don't scare me...

This ARTICLE also said similar thing about his wrist.

"If anything stands in the way of such dominance, it is his own body. On the BBC's Today at Wimbledon programme the other evening, Andrew Castle made the interesting point that the 22-year-old's right wrist simply might not stand up to the strain of repeatedly whipping his groundstrokes as powerfully as he does."

Re: Please don't scare me...

oh no......
You guys are scaring me so much. Hope it's not true I'd badly love to see Roger injury-immune for dozens of years for the sake of his brilliant tennis.

But I do think it's impossible that no one has never mentioned such things to Roger. And Roger seems now very determined to last his career as long as he wants. So he should know what is good for his health and what is not, which is proved by the fact that he really seldom suffers serious injuries now. Plus it seems like the wrist problem is not haunting him at all at least at this stage. I'm being positive coz I really hate to see the worst ever thing happen to Roger that he will end his career much earlier than I have expected due to some damn injury. It's not acceptable and unbearable.

Re: Please don't scare me...

A mediocre so-called orthopaedic surgeon who can hardly understand the technique of a sport genius dares to speak annoyingly

Re: Please don't scare me...

Rogi's wrist is very strong and as long as it stays strong it will be fine. I also worried about his open stance forehand because sometimes he does do it but all in all he doesn't. As long as he takes care of himself he will be fine.

Re: Please don't scare me...

Well I'll join the cheering for it to never come true too! Just too depressing to think about it really.
I agree Dirk, hopes he take good care of himself.

Re: Please don't scare me...

Rogi is very in tune with his body. He wouldn't be able to play like that if he it hurt him. Health is the most important to him. I'm sure Becker brought that e-mail to his attention. I wonder what Rogi's response was. I think he will be fine. I just hope he unblocks his nose.

Re: Please don't scare me...

They just asked Roger in the press conference about a potential wrist problem and he laughed it off
