Smile Resumé of 2007

I leave the analyses to the people on here who are able to express this better than me, but just wanted to say the following:

What can you write about a year where Roger was able to win 3 Grand Slam titles for the third time in his career and reached all 4 Slam finals for the second consecutive time? A year, where he became the first player since Björn Borg in 1980 to win a Grand Slam tournament without losing a set. A year, where he won his 5th Wimbledon title in a row and equalized another record of Borg. (I wonder if Borg had imagined this when he called Roger in 2001 and jocularly thanked him for beating Sampras in Wimbledon and preventing Pete to equalize his record.) A year, where he ended the season for the 4th consecutive time as the No. 1 player in the rankings. A year, where he extended his time as the No. 1 for over 200 weeks in total?

In the important tournaments and deciding moments Roger has proven why he ist he dominating player on the tour. He was able to beat his main rival Rafael Nadal in the 5th set at the Wimbledon final and this just after losing to him a few weeks ago in the final of Roland Garros. This is the one and only loss this year which really counts and which is probably the most hurting one for Roger and us fans. In the US Open final he won against Novak Djokovic, who prior to the last Grand Slam tournament of the year got his first victory against Roger in Montreal.

Roger ended the season with his 4th Masters Cup title and performances in his last three matches there who were amongst his sidereal hours of the past months.

Roger didn’t just shown us his amazing tennis this year, but also that he is able like nobody else on the tour to react to losses and recover from them. In contrast to some “fans” he seems to be able to see his losses from this year realistically. There are days when the opponent is playing a bit better and maybe has the needed dram of luck. This belongs to the sports and we shouldn’t forget that Roger was able to win matches in the past which he could have lost.

Often times the current generation of players get criticzed because of lacking quality, but when in the history of the game there have been so many upcoming talents on the tour? Not to forget Rafael Nadal, who is the No. 2 ranked player for more than 2 ˝ years now and has more points as previous No. 1 players.
With his success Roger forces the other players to work hard on their game and to improve themselves.

That some of Rogers performances in the past month have been labelled as mediocre just proves how extraordinary his achievements are and how high the expectations on him.

One should never forget the pressure on his shoulders. At nearly every tournament a record is waiting to get equalized or broken by him. With his success he is in the limelight of the media, designedly or not.

Lets not be angry about any losses of him, but happy about his stunning successes of the season. Maybe some people will realise just in a few years what Roger is doing since a few years.

In this sense a heartily congratulations to Roger and a sincere thankyou for the brilliant tennisyear 2007. Looking forward to the new season which will hopefully bring us lots of his unique tennis again and opportunities to celebrate
