Greats Debate

From July issue Tennis magazine

Pete Sampras vs Roger Federer- at their best , who would win?

Cliff Drysdale

" Federer has more variety than anyone since Laver. Sampras has a better serve, but not by much. They are equal in volleys. Federer's ground strokes are so much better than Sampras' that that would give him an edge. I've never seen a player with Federer's arsenal. I'll go with Federer in five."

Mary Carillo

" Federer on clay, but on other surfaces, it's 50-50. Each can take over a point with just about any stroke, though Federer's backhand is more of a weapon. Sampras' serve is more imposing, but Federer returns so well that Sampras would be pushed hard on his serve games."

Luke Jensen

" In Australia where fitness is a big factor, Federer would win. Ditto in France, where he's much more comfortable. Then you get to Wimbledon, and Sampras plays quick-fire points better tan anyone. At the US Open, Sampras would win. So they are coming into the Tennis Masters Cup at two matches apiece. Just remember: Sampras beat back every challenge for a decade. He'll beat Federer in five."

Pam Shriver

" Federer has won both his Slam finals in straight sets, so he hasn't been through that crucible of being down and then winning. Pete did that so many times. From a tactical standpoint Federer is not playing particularly proficient net-rushers, so it would be interesting to see how he handles hitting one passing shot after another versus Sampras. Finally, I think Sampras' guns-his serve and his forehand-would overcome Federer's versatility."

Re: Greats Debate

Gee, 2v2, I guess I will be the fifth to break the tie...

I think overall Roger has a better game. But Pete's serve and volley put opponents under so much pressure that it's so hard to say. To those who watched Roger's match against Pete, how did Roger beat him? How well did Roger handle his serve and volley?

Re: Greats Debate

Their match at Wimbly was great. Don't be fooled by the Pete 5 setter in round 2. They both played great and had 25 aces each. It was tight and Pete had his chances but Roger won in the end. Roger was stunning Pete more and more as the match went on. At one point in the 3rd set, Pete let out a growl of anguish. Classic match. I can't wait to see how much better Roger gets in the future.

Thanks for the info Dirk. Hmm... btw, if I can buy 1 out of 2 tapes, which would you guys recommend? The one against Sampras, or SF against Andy last year?

Re: Greats Debate

a tough one, L Ceh... so buy both! 19-yr-old Rogi upsetting Pete, THE Wimby champ, is priceless! Pete was so stunned, he couldn't believe it -- you have to see Rogi's unbelievable return to win the match in the 5th set!!! and the emotion pouring out... he simply won the hearts of everyone watching in awe of this young talent!!

Rogi humiliating Pandy was a thing of beauty! Rogi played absolutely amazing tennis -- about the best I've ever seen, AND on the lovely green grass of the AELTC.

Hopp Rogi! Go Gonzo! Allez Gasquet!

You aren't making this any easier, RogiFan...

I guess I would really have to buy both. Seems like 2 incredible matches.

ummmmm LCeh, you'd better buy both. Don't think you'll ever want to miss either of them. I've watched his semi vs Andy for quite many times, and NEVER got even a bit bored. WOOOOOOWs came out of my mouth every time I watched it I myself badly want that Pete match too. It's a classical and unforgettable moment for Rogi I guess. But still no way to find it...

Re: Greats Debate

I could get it on tape. A friend of mine has it. Not sure if I could make copies of it on DVD or on tape again.

No he didn't, Pete won most of his slam finals in straight sets and usually when Pete was pressured in slam finals he would lose.

At the moment I think Pete's best would beat Roger in 4 sets (on grass & hardcourts) but Pete was not at his best at Roger's age so it is to hard to make a fair comparison.
It is way to early to compare Federer to Pete anyway.

.
Well, i can remember 2 slam finals to date, that Sampras had to fight back to win: Wimbledon 1995 vs. Boris Becker. Lost 1st set, but fought hard to win in 4. Wimbledon 2000 vs. Rafter. Rafter won the 1st set in a tiebreak, and in the 2nd, i think he may have had a set point to go up 2 sets to none, and i know he had a big lead in the 2nd set tiebreak. But Pete pulled it out in 4. But besides, Pete was a very mentally tough player, as well as a guy that could blow you off the court in straight sets

Yes, like 10 years too early.

But if you do compare them at the same stage in their careers, then I have to say Pete's ahead (more slams, longer at number one etc).
