Pete Sampras about Roger

This is from July issue Tennis magazine.

Q Federer's young, but he being touted by some as next Pete Sampras. Is the comparison valid?

A It's nice to see somebody with complete game, but (in the AO final) he stayed back more than I thought he would.
He's clearly the best in the world. You know, you get to a point where it's about different levels-winning majors, defending majors, than being really great, it being your life. That's kind of what happened to me.
He's got all the tools. It's nice to watch him, he's a smooth player, easy on the eyes. Roger got that even keel. He doesn't get too high or too low. That helps when you want to be the best player in the world, no doubt.

Re: Pete Sampras about Roger

Thanks Skyward.

Seems like Pete is still watching some tennis

But what does he mean when he said :"he doesn't get too high or too low?", the height or the way he strikes the ball?

Re: Pete Sampras about Roger

I'm actually surprised that Pete watches tennis matches. I thought he was done, finito, with tennis.

But I guess when some player's being touted as "the next Pete Sampras" the real Sampras may want to tune in every now and then and keep tabs on his twin.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Maybe Roger should hire Pete as his coach...

Pete rules. I think Roger will S&V more and more as he gets better at it. He doesn't do it much at Oz because the surface is not friendly for it. Roger also said he wants to mix it up more and play at the baseline to prolong his career. Roger seems keen on playing till about 30. He wants his S&V game to be great on grass primarily. Thanks Skyward.

Re: Pete Sampras about Roger

Rogi's a smoothie alright... Pete DID tip Rogi to win Wimby last yr [funny he didn't even consider Pandy... ] as he knows talent when he sees it [or when he's beaten by it!]

Hopp Rogi! Go Gonzo! Allez Gasquet!

Hmmm. I know he said it tires him out to play alot of Serve & Volley, but i find i tire myself out more by playing from the baseline, so i Serve & Volley alot more than i used to to keep the points short.
As always Pete speaks words of great wisdom!!

"I think that now and until the end of my career, I can really play with my mind at peace, and no longer hear that I've never won Roland Garros." - Roger Federer

Re: Pete Sampras about Roger

Rogi was talking about doing it all the time on his 1st serve. Maybe as he gets stronger he will do it more and more. Grass is the easiest surface on the body so he should do it all the time there.

Re: Pete Sampras about Roger

Just want to add this from the interview

Q: Are you going to line up your Wimbledon trophies on top of the TV and watch the tournament?
A: As you can see, I don’t have them out. I’ve never been a big watcher. The only tennis I’ve seen for the past year was [Roger] Federer playing [Marat] Safin in the final in Australia, just to see what Federer was playing like, and I was pretty impressed.

It’s interesting. When you’ve been in a sport for so many years you look forward to getting as far from the game as possible, and that’s kind of what I’ve done since the Open in 2002.

Wimbledon starts very early here. I’m not going to be like a 12-year-old, setting my alarm clock so I can watch it at 6:00 in the morning.

Re: Pete Sampras about Roger

It's cool that Pete tipped Rogi to win Wimby last yr -- well, it takes one to know one -- a Wimby champ, that is!!

Interesting the Pete watched Rogi beat Marat at AO this year -- he was curious, wasn't he?

Even tho I was never a Pete fan, I still was impressed that he could actually focus and win the USO02 v. AA after not winning a title for over 2 years!! He was the undisputed champ, no doubt about it.

Thanks, Pete!

And to think that our little Rogi stopped the great Pete's Wimby run in 2001!!! Amazing...
