Roger's defensive play against Guga

For those who watched the match, I believe Roger was
far too passive and defensive in his game strategy.

Usually going for his shots, but he seemed off and when he did,
missing by a mile and way too often

(oh yeah, and I havn't recovered yet)

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Well please recover. The conditons fucked Roger up. It harmed his movement and his returning. Had they only scheduled it last. That hot fast dry court would have been perfect. Next time Roger will adapt. He just isn't comfortable out on that court yet. Roger will do better next time.

Roger had surely a flue. I saw the match but I never saw Mirka. What about her?

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Squirrel, what does Mirka's presence have to do w his defensive play v. Guga??

Anyway, I did not see the match but fr what I can gather, he did play defensively.

I'm wondering now if Rogi underestimated Guga and didn't prepare properly.

He had to know that Guga is inspired on Chatrier and was v determined to beat him.

Well, I'm not happy about the loss but it might as well be v. Guga, who is THE best at RG -- Rogi can learn a few things fr the master.

Rogi still needs A strategy, not just v. experienced, talented clay guys, but also v. attacking players. He needs a plan B.

I don't want Rogi to come away w negative feelings about Chatrier and feel he can never ever win there... he can and he s have a more positive attitude.

Hopp Rogi! Go Gonzo! Allez Gasquet!

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Roger hada plan but wasn't about to pull it off for a variety of reasons including Guga. Stop babying him, Roger is very smart and will be better next time. Time to get over it. Hell if Roger does well in the grass season but doesn't win a title I will still be happy for him. I will be pissed though if Guga doesn't go far here.

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

I think we should at least try to give Federer some credit. He even said himself that even down 4-6 4-6 4-5 he still thought that he could come back. He tried to fight back but Guga really was on a roll and you can't take that away from him.

I think that Roger kinda underestimated Guga and thought that he was not going to come out firing as he did. The stats are not too bad, the only problems he had were his footwork and his volleying was not as good. Remember that he has only lost four times this year and that is an excellent record considering that he is the world's best.

Go Federer, Nadal!!!

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

His backhand was bad too, and his returning. Roger just couldn't cope with the changing conditions to get in a better position for Guga. Next year will be a different story if he encounters such conditons.

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Roger played first set very passive probably hoping for mistakes from Guga. But there weren't any. I though, poor Roger, this is just third round for him and he is playing Kuerten who wants to win so badly and plays his best. Roger tried to turn the match over in the second set as he often does, but the court was slippery, he didn't have balance, and couldn't find the line, missing to much... Kuerten was playing elite the whole match, didn't give him a chance, he wasn't missing almost anything, and Guga's serve is very diffucult for Roger as he sais himself, because he can't read it...

It was such an infortunate 3rd round draw for Roger. It's not his fault, it was bad luck. But he should think a little bit how to bit Kuerten and why he was so powerless.

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Kuerten outplayed Roger. period. Guga was the better player that day, Guga made the better shots, had better tactics, Guga served better.

Roger is no superman who can win all his matches just because he's no. 1. Clay is also his least favorite surface.

I'm happy he won Hamburg. RG will still be around next year for Roger to have another shot at it. Hopefully he will have better results.

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Guga is now in the qrts. I do hope his hip holds up. Mrs. B is right. I just wish these kind of threads would stop popping up every time Roger loses in a slam, what will happen if he loses at Wimbly? Just relax Roger will have a long career and will win and lose.

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Completely agree Mrs. B & Dirk! I am happy with his clay season result actually. Last year he got one Master final and 1st RG, this year he won a Master and 3rd round RG. So now I am really looking forward to the grass season. Come on Rogi, let's win some grass for your two lovely ladies(Juliette & Edelweiss)

Yeah Dirk, I am hoping for Guga to go far or win the whole thing if possible. It'll be so wonderful for him to win his fourth RG which he probably should have won if not for the hip surgery.

Re: Roger's defensive play against Guga

Guga might have 5 Rgs by now, and he might have won another slam as well like the Open. Still why Guga is still doing the open stance forehand is beyond me. Guga doesn't have long left. Sometime this year he will have another surgery. I'm just glad Roger doesn't hit his forehand like that. I'm not so sure about Wimbly. I hope Roger does well but who knows. I don't think he will have confidence and comfort issues on the grass.
