This is true although it would also take a Nadal exit from the USO by at least the 4th round or maybe QF's. Federer would have to win at least 5 of Canada, Cincy, the Olympics, the USO, Madrid, Paris, and the TMC (USO and TMC are musts) while being RU in the other two and Nadal would have to not win any of them for Fed to have a good case for #1.

Even if Fed wins all the remaining masters events, wins USO and Masters Cup and Nadal loses early in the USO, I don't believe he should end the year as number one. Maybe if all that happens and he gets the Olympics it would seem more legit but I'm still uncertain.

All of that won't happen so I guess it doesn't matter.

i think thats a bunch of crap.

sampras, agassi, courier et al complained when muster got to #1 by winning a gazillion clay MMs. Too bad.

I think its a moot point though. Rafa will get #1 unless he gets injured.

He didn't end as number one though.

But yeah, there's really no point in discussing this anyway.

Wow I did not realize it was this intense, I totally forgot Nadal swiped the clay masters series, won Roland of course and now Wimbledon. It all makes sense. I actually don't care about hime keeping the number 1 ranking. Now what really matters is that he recovers from these two devastating loses and starts winning again at the big events.

Staying number one or even trying to end number one is not even that important, it's not what is most important now. What is, is whether he can recover from this gut wrenching losses and if he can be able to win the big events again. He will get another three opportunities at the Olympics, US OPEN and the Tennis masters cup.

I am not worried about Roger losing the #1. It is a question of when and not if.

I would like him to win the USO (don't care about the Olympics or TMC this year). Lets see how the Canadian TMS unfolds.

Need ideas for a new signature...

Exactly. To save this season, he *must* win the USO.
It's hard to envision this win at the moment with his bh, slow movement to the fh side, passive returns, and low confidence.

As for rankings, we have two guys with GS title(s) and TMS titles, and in this company Federer is the third best at the moment (I don't care what numbers say).

There is no denying that based on results he's definitely not ahead of either Nadal or Novak. Novak was leading the who's playing the best tennis for the year, but Rafael has taken this accolade away by a landslide. Until the hard court season starts in earnest.

Yup Federer's reaction timing has been hampered all season long. Winning the US OPEN would be vindicating and restoring indeed.

What's amazing is that Nadal now has 6000 points, one of the few players to get to that number (all ranking systems being adjusted). He has a chance to get to around 7000 by year's end. Federer has been at or above 6000 points since the 2004 USO which is truly unbelieveable. A good portion of that time he's been above 7000 points.

It merely shows what we should already know - that we know have two so exceptionally talented guys being in command of the game at such a level that they barely leave any points for other players to pick up. Freakish. Otherwordly.

It's sort-of sad that either of the two is playing in the same era as the other, but I feel very honoured to be able to watch - and live - it all.

I hope that the organizers of the championship keep the surface of the court as it should be, so that we can enjoy quite different styles of battle on different surface. Always hitting each other from behind the baseline on any surface... No thank you.
