Not nice, no, but it is what it is.

He's at least adding a couple more weeks to his already record consecutive streak of being ranked in the top-8. He's at 726 now. Connors stopped at 705. With nothing to defend at Shanghai he should stay top-8 until Basel points drop.

Re: Federer's ranking discussion

I expect Roger to drop to No. 8 after Shanghai, No. 10 after Basel and No. 15 after Paris, as the WTF points will also come off at that time.

I hope that he will be back in full form next year and quickly make up for the lost ground!

He's not defending anything in Shanghai after R1 loss last year so he'll only drop after it if one extra player advances past his total. Which is of course possible, Monfils the most likely candidate. But no certainty he improves on last year.

One thing I'll be looking for is whether he gets a week as #16 and or #17 somewhere down the line, the only positions in the top-25 he hasn't currently had before.

He will get down to #17 by the end of the season. But it does not matter any more . Roger will be 35 and half next year at AO . he will not play this year . I am more worried whether he will be back at all but i keep saying to myself he can not end his career in such an ugly way. Fed is maybe the most beautiful tennis player i have ever seen so it could not be the end. I really hope so.

Kyrgios at least saved him for another week. 5 points ahead on the next list.

Re: Federer's ranking discussion

Fed at #10 after AO win.

And next week:

Monfils not defending some points will put him behind Roger.

Re: Federer's ranking discussion

If he gets two weeks as #9 he'll have at least six weeks in every position in the top-10 and tie Kafelnikov and Nadal in this regard. Only ones with more is Connors (at least 7), Becker (at least 9), Lendl (12), McEnroe (17) and Agassi (33).

If the #4 ranking stay at about the same point level he'd need around 2000 more points before RG. Quite ambitious at that stage imo.

He admitted in interviews before that he wasn't planning on playing much on clay this year.
So he'll probably play Dubai, one of the IW/Miami and then at most one clay master before RG, will get top-8, not more.
