In other words, unless he has mental difficulties then he should also be winning the US Open.

In short, this Slam win isn't at all surprising.
Definitely -- I'm not surprised that he was able to win these matches lately, because his level of play for the past eight months has been impressive; I just look back on how a felt a year, two years ago, and I can hardly believe it.

Re: Federer's ranking discussion

I always stayed confident that he would win one slam again (only recently I started having few doubts because great competitors -Djokovic, Nadal- prevented him several times),

but I never thought he could be back to number 1 again until very last months.

Wimbledon is the greatest, but the "miracle" is not only about Wimbledon :

he also won the WTF, Bercy, Indian Wells, Madrid, Dubai, Rotterdam, Basel ... all of these tournaments were great feats. He only lost one final (Halle) but in Halle, the huge win against Raonic was the key for getting the number 1 this monday.

And just to realize how much of a miracle and a fight it was to reach that, in nearly all of these tournaments, there were matches where he really had to fight deep and which depended on a few points : Benneteau in Wimbledon, Tsonga in the WTF, Raonic and Bellucci in Indian Wells, Raonic and Berdych in Madrid, Del Potro in Dubai, Davydenko in Rotterdam ... he won all of these !

Which is a miracle !

The only tight match he lost was the US Open semi against Djokovic

I personally don't think he has played better recently than since he started back with Annacone, which was the real start of the "new Federer" imo, and I do think personally that 2011 was a great great year for Federer, especially in slams.

But he got this number 1 through winning all of these very tight fights !

And the way he reacted to the US Open loss is huge and a key to all that ... as he said himself and as he said he hopes Murray can do the same about the recent loss, which is not certain from McLagan's and a few others' words.

useless old guy

Re: Federer's ranking discussion

It would have been a bit tragic when such a dominant player like Roger would have missed to get this record by just a few days.

It's truly amazing that he was able to get back to #1 and after all his achievements still finds the motivation and passion for tennis.

Congratulations Roger

Yes it's a tale of two quarters. Next quarter Djo has tons to defend and Fedal have lots to gain. Last quarter, Fed has tons to defend and Najoker have lots to gain

The ride for the last two years has been excruciating (good and bad) but I think the way he achieved the record just makes it that much more "sweeter".

Had he just gone ahead and limped his way in 2010 it would have been satisfying but now, having defeated #1, #17, #7, it just feels amazing.

Re: Federer's ranking discussion

Doing all this at Wimbledon is more worthy as possible.
Now contiunuing hoping Roger can mantain and make larger and longer in the time this advantage of #1.

I think the last years when he didn't win at the biggest appointments it was a phisiological stop,
expetially he couldn't stay focussed for long time and he didn't fight as he did in the last mounths, and the lack of significant victories got him hungrier,
expetially the Wimb and USO defeat leading 2 sets to 0 and having MPs in NY.

I was so sad for the last one for months when at the end of the last season (maybe Paris Bercy or the WTFinals)
I had a flash and I thought this one would helped him to come back stronger than before
and winning some mentally tough matches beeing 1 or 2 sets down proved these my fellings.
