How was Mathieu's match? I wasn't at home and couldn't watch. Didn't think he would need 3 sets against Desein
Here's a synopsis of what I saw. I started watching with PHM serving at 5-3 30-30.
PHM was called for a time violation while preparing to serve at 30-30. He won the pt, then argued with the umpire. I think he was saying the ball boys were taking a long time so it wasn't his fault he wasn't serving in time. Then he served it out. But, he continued to give the umpire some words. PHM's anger must have not subsided because when I tuned in again he was down 0-3 in the second set. He held for 1-3. At 1-4 he got broken and then tanked the rest of the second set. Desein served 3 or 4 aces, I think 4 to serve out the set. The third set started with PHM holding. Then, Desein served 4 aces in a row in his first service game. So I think he served 8 aces in a row in those two service games. A record? I don't know. PHM then held for 2-1. PHM then broke Desein for 3-1. He held for 4-1. He had BP for 5-1 but Desein saved it and held for 2-4. PHM held for 5-2. Desein held for 3-5 and PHM served for the match. As often happens, PHM failed to serve the match out with a pretty bad service game and then broke Desein for the match at 4-5. So, the last two matches PHM has squeaked by and failed to serve both matches out, but breaking back each time to win. I guess a win is a win and while this trend may work at the Challenger level, it is probably a factor in why he hasn't been winning too many matches at the ATP level. But, he's defended his pts. from Petange last year, and faces the same opponent in the final, Kamke as last year. It should be a competitive final if PHM still has some gas in the tank.
