I guess it's the surface? Hard Court in southern Europe sounds a bit weired.

3 ATP events and 6 challengers beside Guimaraes in week 30. As always summer challengers have a lot of filler players.

Re: Week 30: Guimaraes, Portugal [Entry List]

I can understand Pedro not being here, but for sure not Gastao. I mean WTF! Hopefully he doesn't ask for a WC. If he wanted to be here, he should have signed in the 1st place. I expect WC's to Machado, Frederico Silva, Joao DOmingues and Murta. Hopefully there is a miracle and Machado can get in directly, so a player like Vasco Mensurado can get a MD spot as well.

You're always criticizing the choices of portuguese players and younever try to understand the reasons. Gastão Elias is injured, can't you get that? He already withdrawn from the Challenger next week and he isn't expecting to play on this week. If he can recover obviously he'll ask for a WC.

About Pedro Sousa, I think he wants to play in clay, not sure.

He should never played this week, then. He knew (as we all knew) he was obviously injured. If a player makes a sacrifice to play in a german CH I expect him to make (at least) the same sacrifice in the only PT challenger we have (and 1st one since ages). If you are injured, just don't play at all! I want the best for their health. I just don't want them to make stupid schedule choices.

And about Pedro, I do know he prefers clay, that is why I said I understood him not being here (even if it would be nice of him to show up here. He already participate in portuguese hardcourts Futures, early this year). Not the same with Gastao, though.

Gastão is in a really hard position. Top-100 chances are going down and he really tried to make an effort this week because it isn't an injury that you can't play at all, but the pain is always there. This type of injurys takes a long time to disappear and he tried to play to see if he can keep playing while is recovering. Now he understood that it isn't possible and after the lost yesterday he withdrawned from the next tournaments. Expectable decision, I'm not seeing so many questions around that.

Re: Week 30: Guimaraes, Portugal [Entry List]

A bit poor the field... Amazed that more spanish players didn´t sign this tournament. The tournament should consider another date, as the conditions are much more agreable in spring or even autumn (it should be blazing hot)...
A good shot for the up and coming portuguese players, Frederico Silva, V. Mensurado, J. Domingues, AGMurta and others. Hope that Rui Machado do well also...

Re: Week 30: Guimaraes, Portugal [Entry List]

I realy hope that Machado can do a good tournament in Guimarães. He is recovering his best tennis after playing 'Futures' in the last weeks.

About the dates of this event, I agree they are not the best, but in my view the tournament could benefit of being scheduled in Portuguese nice Autumn, tipically hard-court season, in order to atract better players.
... But honestly, the main thing is that the Organizing Commettee can make it happen again in the next years, that's the real challenge.

yeah, you are right. portugal´s finantial situation isnt good at all but they made a big effort this year to put a few challengers again. now the real challenge is to keep them the following years! same for spain of course

I'm not seeing Guimarães CH be organized on the next years. This year Guimarães is the European capital of sport and I think that this event is the result of that. Just my 2 cents.
