Rogan, Cseh set world records in Italy

Markus Rogan of Austria and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary set world records Thursday on the opening day of the European Short-Course Swimming Championships in Trieste, Italy.
Rogan finished in 1 minute, 50.43 seconds to win the men's 200-meter backstroke. He beat the previous mark of 1:50.52 set by Aaron Peirsol of the United States in Indianapolis in October 2004.

Cseh won the 200-meter individual medley in 1:53.46 seconds, breaking the record of 1:53.93 set by George Bovell of Trinidad in March 2003.

In the 400-meter freestyle, Russia's Yury Prilukov set a European record 3:37.81, improving by nearly two seconds the five-year-old mark set by Italy's Massimiliano Rosolino.

Britain got its first gold medal in the competition from Mark Foster, who won the 50-meter freestyle in 21.27 seconds, 0.2 seconds ahead of France's Frederick Bousquet.

German quartet Thomas Rupprath, Mark Warnecke, Johannes Dietrich and Steffen Deibler won the 200-meter medley relay ahead of Ukraine and Britain.

Katarzyna Baranowska and Aleksandra Urbanczyk finished 1-2 in the women's 200-meter individual medley to give Poland a gold and silver.

Hungary's Beatrix Boulsevicz took the 200-meter butterfly final.

The championships in this north Italian port city continue through Sunday.
