Re: Week 13: Portugal F3

At the beginning of the week, I was asking myself why Gastao Elias hadn't planned to play this future...Instead, he has defeated Robin Roshardt in Miami. Congrats to him, that's a big win.

defeating Roshardt isn't difficult these days as he is losing even to Poles. one slam wonder. or actually, orange bowl aint slam.

his scores in juniors after orange:
Yucatan Cup G-1
1st round lost to Christopher Racz (USA)

Opus Nottinghill Int g-1
1st l. to Sidorenko

AO G-A
1st l. to Panfil (POL)

in seniors, he received this year 4 wc's.

futures 1:
1st round l. to Marco Pedrini (ITA)

futures 2:
d. Emmrich, Moser, lost to Gulbis (LAT) - he's been good recently so gave 4 games to Roshard

futures3:
1st round l. to Daniel Brands (i saw him in szczecin week before and he sucked and couldnt defeat a polish player so it doesnt look nice for Robin)

Miami Q:
1st round: l. to Patience

(this last I can understand)

Thanks for the research nathi.

I had followed his results actually, and realized he wasn't in great shape (though he wasn't humiliated by patience like You-Know-Who against You-Know-Who). But given that Elias is a promising 15 y-o player, it's quite interesting. Let's watch what he will do against Chekhov who hasn't had very good results either these last days. But the 2 or 3 years to come should give more indication I guess.

My concern about Gastão, is all the pressure that he has at his shoulders. I mean the kid is super talented, but here everyone has great expectations about him. That can be tricky.

Good luck to him in Miami.

You mean on mtf or in Portugal ? Because if you mean on mtf, I haven't watched what have been told about him so I don't know if there's a fuss about him. And be sure that me noticing a good win of him doesn't mean I believe he'll be the next-big-thing, just that I am interested in junior tennis and promising youngsters.

In Portugal, of course. I can't be sure, but my guess is that most of the people that posts here on MTF, don't even have a clue of who the hell Gastão is.

And yes, he is seen has the next big thing in my country. And that is why I think it can be tricky. I really like the kid, think he is talented and wish him all the sucess in the world.

Re: Week 13: Portugal F3

Gastão Elias at the age of 14 last year applied 60 76 to Niels Desein, who was a Junior Top 10 by then (aged 18) on a junior tournament final last year. It's no fluke, he's greatly talented, let's hope he doesn't get ruined.

He lost in 3 to Chekhov. It's a great try anyway, beating one and taking a set off two of the best juniors in the world on his first serious outing.

By the way: Let's go Frederico and Rui. You can still make the final I hoped.

I do Claudia But I am not a typical MTF poster (just look at my signature )
I have come across his name at some low age category events in US while I used to have a website about Latin American players and I was also commenting juniors' achievements.

Often happens that children who are successful at the age of 12 or 14 do not convert these hopes into senior's career, but somehow I have a good feeling about Gastao (and knowing I discovered JMDP and some others, i have good hand to talents!)... let's hope for him

I have just realized Ivan Sergeev from Ukraine played SF at Orang (lost to Robin)
geez I saw that child in Szczecin couple of weeks ago and thought 'what a talent!' plus he's a nice, helpful child ... if he doesn't drink his career out (like all talented childern from Eastern European countries do), he can be in top 100 if not even higher, I swear

Re: Week 13: Portugal F3

ahh PS. my Portuguese friends, do you think that Gastao should get a Wild Card to Estoril or will it be like giving one to Donald Young too early?

I think Portugal is in other tennis situation than US and not many players would deserve one more than him. BUT... to not to repeat US mistakes... what's your opinion in this case?

Re: Week 13: Portugal F3

Absolutely not. Physically he's still not up to pair, he has lost on both his senior matches so far... Future qualifiers. The WC better go to Rui Machado again, last year he took a set off Calleri and he can do better this year. He's still 21, he can get to the top 100 with luck, hardwork and support.
