Cool Best Piggy Roaster of 2006- voting now open!

Mods- please excuse the duplicity. I tried adding a poll to the Piggy Roasting thread to no avail

Alright, ladies and gentlemen. Seeing as the off season is the time to reflect on the happenings of the last year and a time to try and combat the boredom of idleness I have decided it would be nice to look back on 2006 with regards to the different recipes we have been exposed to and styles used by various players to roast MTF's most beloved ( or hated ) porcine character.

For those of you who do not know what I am talking about- this character is none other than Rafael Nadal and this thread is dedicated for MTF members to choose the player who in thier mind inflicted the highest quality defeat(s) on Nadal in 2006 (said player will heretofore be known as a "roaster")

With regards to choosing your favourite roaster for 2006- you are not obligated to give reasons for your choice however it would make it more interesting if you did.

Choosing the best roaster does not necessarily mean the player who dropped the least amount of sets or has a better H2H record vs. El Chancho, but it could be a particular incident that took place during one of the roastings, a player's roasting style, an exceptionally inspiring roasting performance or whatever reason you see fit to grant your chosen player this coveted title.

Please note in order to reduce complications you may only choose one roaster and the polls will close in two weeks time on Friday December 15th so please make sure to submit your vote before the deadline.

The winner of this piggy roasting competition will be given the Golden Pig:

The runner up will receive the Silver Pig:

And there will also be a Bronze Pig for the third best finish:

So, without further ado, here are the 9 roasters of 2006 with a short profile and (where possible) a short clip of their roasting endeavour(s):

================================================== =======

1.)

Arnaud Clement
# of roastings: 1

Venue of roasting #1: Marseilles, France
Round: Semifinal
Score: 2-6,6-3,7-5
Synopsis: Having come off an injury layoff stretching back to the off season this was Nadal's first ATP tournament since his victory in Madrid in October of the previous year. The ankles were particularly soft and tender and Clement demonstrated all of his craftiness and guile to slowly cook the pork meat to a tender crisp.

2.)

James Blake
# of roastings: 2

Venue of roasting #1: Indian Wells, CA, U.S.A
Round: Semifinal
Score: 7-5,6-3
Synopsis: With a title in Dubai under his belt and a good run into the semifinals of the first TMS event of the year, many pork dorks were fancying their boy's chance to continue that run in the Californian desert and dismiss Blake's triumph over Nadal in the previous year's U.S. Open as no more than a first time lucky strike. However it was not to be as the man from Yonkers is world renowned for his delight and exquisite touch in making the finest spareribs as they scintilatingly crackle over the fire.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nujzRg6FKNQ

Venue of roasting #2: Shanghai, China
Round: Round Robin, Gold Group
Score: 6-4,7-6(0)
Synopsis: Blake scraped in at the very last minute to grab the final qualifying spot for the TMC at Shanghai following Tommy Hass's retirment in the semifinal of the TMS Paribas event in Paris just one week earlier. Rafael was on a bit of a downward slope since the beginning of the North American hardcourt season and many pork dorks again were eager for their boy to finally pull one over Blake reasoning that since his two loses to the American were on U.S. soil, not having the home crowd to support him would minimize Jame's chances to beat Rafa. Their illusions were once again shattered right before their eyes. Even though Rafa did kick, grunt squeal and scream his way to a 2nd set 4-0 lead over Blake, the Harvard man refound his form and muscled the little piggy from corner to corner pounding the rough pork meat into a delicious pulp before shutting the oven door and turning the furnace on at full blast. Quite a spectacular roasting it was.

3.)

Carlos Moya
# of roastings: 1

Venue of roasting #1: Miami, FL, U.S.A
Round: Last 64
Score: 2-6,6-1,6-1
Synopsis: Carlos was Rafa's mentor from since the days when little Rafa was just a piglet roaming around happily playing. Following a tough loss in the semifnals in Indian Wells the previous week Nadal started off the match very well but soon the older and experienced Moya engaged his former protege head on and sliced and diced the sinews immobilizing the pig before cutting it up, grinding it and amalgamating it into a wonderful pork pie.

4.)

Lleyton Hewitt
# of roastings: 1

Venue of roasting #1: Queens Club, London, U.K
Round: Quarterfinal
Score: 3-6,6-3 ret
Synopsis: After yet another claycourt season which saw Nadal run, squeal, root and roll in the muddy clay from Monte Carlo, to Barcelona, Rome and Paris his run was finally stopped short on the grass courts of London's Queen club where Lleyton Hewitt fully benifited from an injured pig to progress to the semifinals. After losing the first set, Lleyton remained steady as ever as Rafa was slowly cooking himself until he had finally self-combusted after losing the 2nd set. A strange self-inflicted roasting not yet seen, this would be the first of many for the remainder of the year as we would all be re-introduced to the delightful delicacy of fine roasted pork.

5.)

Roger Federer
# of roastings: 2

Venue of roasting #1: Wimbledon, London, U.K
Round: Final
Score: 6-0,7-6(5),6-7(2),6-3
Synopsis: Roger who? After a long, gruelling and achingly dull claycourt season in which Roger Federer's perpetual place in the history books of tennis seemed to be in Nadal's back pocket, MTF was in the midst of pork dork mayhem the likes of which had never been seen. Roger did come achingly close to a couple of roastings earlier in the year in Dubai and also in Rome where he had all but trapped the piggy in the oven but at the last possible second forgot to latch the lock on the grill as the piggy broke free before the fire engulfed him. With all the pressure on Roger shoulders to stop the porcine invasion of the holy lawns of Wimbledon, Federer kept his part of the bargain as there would be no slip ups this time. Oh, there were a couple of times where it seemed as if Roger's merciful ways would get the better of him, particularly after dropping the third set on a teibreak and losing his serve at 5-1 in the fourth set. This time, however, Roger kept his goal in sight and closed the deal not forgetting the latch as he turned on the oven at full force inflicting a stinging, painful and monstrous roasting- the first ever in a grand slam final to date. Roger was also the only roaster this year to successfully prepare a side order of ham bagel in this deliciously eagerly anticipated roasting. In hindsight this roasting opened the floodgates and would inadvertadely lead to many more roastings throughout the second half of the year
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kpP3zIfzRw

Venue of roasting #2: Shanghai, China
Round: Semif
Score: 6-4,7-5
Synopsis: After recovering from another embarassing roasting to (then) world #8 James Blake, Nadal took advantage of two roasting midgets in his group Robredo and Davydenko to book his place in the semifinals and play the winner of the red group Roger Federer. Having been unsuccessful in many roasting attempts earlier in the year, Federer had finally managed to roast in perhaps the most crucial meeting yet between the two at Wimbledon earlier in July. Coupled with that memory and having observed the masterpiece of his good friend James Blake earlier on in the tournament Roger came out with his knife and skewers sharpened and immediately started making painful incisions on the pig to break early in the first set. A typical lapse associated with roasting ensued while serving for the first set, however Roger quickly recovered to slice half the pig open to take the first set 6-4. He always had the upper hand in the second set and despite having failed to convert on two match point opportunities he created a third at 6-5 and finally rammed the skewer down piggy's throat with a vicious crosscourt forehand ripper off an attempted dropshot. The fire was blazing high and mighty in what was ultimately the final formal roasting of 2006.

6.)

Tomas Berdych
# of roastings: 2

Venue of roasting #1: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Round: Last 16
Score: 6-1,3-6,6-2
Synopsis: Despite already affirming his roasting abilities in two very close three setters against Nadal in 2005 one of which he won in Cincinnati, Tomas Berdych was flying low beneath the radar for many people as Rafa was slowly trying to work his way into defending his Canada Masters title. The pig looked as if he had been hit by a truck as balls were flying past him left right and centre in the beginning of the match. A slow down in intensity on Berdych's part saw the pig use his grunts and squealing Vamoses to even the match at one set all before the Czech mack truck got back into gear and administered a bludgeoning roadkill to the pig after which he subsequently tossed him into the sizzling bonfire.
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-uyyzxy5HU

Venue of roasting #2: Madrid, Spain
Round: Quarterfinal
Score: 6-3,7-6(6)
Synopsis: Although we did not know it at the time, this would perhaps be the moment of 2006 most rife in infamy certainly for many pork dorks. Tomas Berdych was literally in the lion's den as the local Madrid crowd were like a surging tidal wave trying to repel this roasting prodigy from applying his nasty trade on the pig's home soil. Despite their best efforts, the man was too stubborn and his knifes were too sharp as he held his own in the second set after winning the first to become only the third man to achieve a double roast in 2006. He then proceeded to put a heavily controversial and spicy garnish on the finished porduct by hushing the crowd causing many people in the audience to spit the roasted pork meat out in disgust. Yes, it was certainly as close as any man had come to roasting a whole crowd along with the pig. He also became the first man in 2 years since Vince Spadea to roast the pig on his home turf. A truly memorable (and perhaps THE most memorable) roasting of 2006.

7.)

Juan Carlos Ferrero
# of roastings: 1

Venue of roasting #1: Cincinnati, OH, U.S.A
Round: Quarterfinal
Score: 7-6(2),7-6(3)
Synopsis: Juan Carlos Ferrero had never done anything to suggest he had any roasting potential in the past. In fact, in all of his previous four encounters with the pig he had come out on the losing end. This time however, Ferrero was experiencing a surge in form he had not experienced in almost three years. The pig, on the other hand had grown fat and tired after devouring everything in sight on his favourite muddy clay and following an early exit from the Canada Masters tournament the previous week. Ferrero was pounding his forehands away and remaining steady and calm as he used his relatively small yet effective daggers to nick away one piece at a time until the pig had fallen into pieces by the end of this match. Ferrero proceeded to collect all the scattered remains and toss them in the firepit sizzling them to perfection.

8.)

Mikhail Youzhny
# of roastings: 1

Venue of roasting #1: New York, NY, U.S.A
Round: Quarterfinal
Score: 6-3,5-7,7-6(5),6-1
Synopsis: This was perhaps the most surprising roasting of the year and only the second at a grand slam. When the draw for the U.S. Open was announced, it seemed as if all the players who could potentially do damage to piggy's chances for a final berth were safely out of harm's way. Two of the most prominent piggy roasters in Blake and Berdych were safely stashed away on the other side of the draw far away from Rafa. The pork dorks again were ready to dismiss a mediocre hard court season leading up to the Open and preparing for their charge to make another run to a final so that he could topple the ruthless tyrant of tennis in the final and help bring perfect logic and cure to the demented Fedtards of MTF. They had not, however counted on Mikhail Youzhny posing any sort of threat and perhaps they were right in their initial assessment. Indeed, Youzhny had lost their previous three meetings in 2005 to Nadal. However, a closer look beneath the surface would reveal that one of those defeats came at the Australian Open in five torrid sets in which Youzhny had his chances and could have very well ended up the winner in that encounter. Youzhny it seems saves his best for grand slams and this was no exception as he started off the match with his glinting sabre inflicting painful blows to the pig. After a close second set which saw the pig retaliate it seemed as if control of the match was slipping away from Youzhny as the pig had the third set on his racquet. Youzhny however did not relent and held on tight to the pig's ankles and kept slashing repeatedly, each thrust piercing the very core of the flesh. He managed to regain his grip and prevented the pig from escaping by winning a very close third set on the tiebreak. Following this enormous psychological victory and demoralization of the pig, the fourth set was all but a formality as Youzhny went into bereserk mode stabbing and slicing with all his strength drawing blood and angry squeals of pain from a totally helpless piggy. He then finished off the match after dumping a barrel of gasoline on the pig and torching him to a burning crispy heap of charcoal.

9.)

Joachim Johansson
# of roastings: 1

Venue of roasting #1: Stockholm, Sweden
Round: Last 16
Score: 6-4,7-6(4)
Synopsis: This roasting was an incredible experience for Pim Pim who had come off a long layoff due to injury. In his first regular ATP tournament since losing in the first round of San Jose earlier in the year, Pim Pim had the ominous task of taking on the #2 player and mighty Pig of tennis in Rafael Nadal. This proved to be an inspiration for the towering Swede as he blasted huge serve after huge serve and pounded his mighty forehand to subdue the pig. Aided by an electric and powerful crowd, Pim Pim clubbed the pig on the head repeatedly, hung him upside down on the stake and set the fire ablaze as it engulfed the pig. A hearty serving of Swedish meatballs was generously distributed to the home crowd on that fantastic day.

Re: Best Piggy Roaster of 2006- voting now open!

My personal vote goes for Tomas Berdych. Yes, Blake had a flawless record against the pig this year and even Roger managed to roast him twice despite losing on numerous other occassions. Youzhny had a fantastic awe inspiring performance against him at the U.S. Open. But the one thing that tipped the scales in Berdych's favour for me was the infamous Madrid roasting and his post match reactions to the crowd

Not the smartest move on the Czech's part admittedly, however this (rather stupid) show of bravery should be somehow rewarded and I think it would only be fitting for him to hold aloft the Golden Piggy trophy in two week's time

Tough choice, but my vote goes to Roger for winning in Wimbledon against Nadal and delivering the most delicious bagel of the year

I had to go with JCF, because of the emotional baggage behind it Youzhny's flawless performance at the USO can't go without mention though.

You are such a little stinker!

As for the thread- I think Berdych by far- just because of all of the baggage that came along with the last win.

I like a lot of players.

RonE, you just made me choke on my hamburger!!!

I bow to your eloquence and sense of humor. You know well that I love the dear Piggy to bits (yes, I do!) but I just can't help myself laughing at your wonderful Piggy Roasting-posts.

My choice: Rogelio, for the wonderful Wimbly bagel, and reminding a lot of people who is indeed the *real* Numero Uno del Mundo!

Awesome post

My vote goes to Berdych. The desert in Madrid is just too delicious.

It would be great if someone actually buys that golden pig and send it to the winner. I bet someone like Fed with his goofy antics can see the humour in this.

Clear choice: Berdych just for the sheer drama in Madrid alone.

Blake would be a good choice but the Berdych matches clearly have more tension.

How can Federer be called roaster of the year if our barbecued the Swiss 4 times himself?

Nope...Berdych.

Ron, this is the best thread, as well as the best single post I have encountered in my two years here, a true masterpiece!

Berdych takes it all, with Blake a close 2nd
