Re: How well do you know English?

Overall I think my English is good, but I have to improve my accent. Also sometimes I find it hard to understand well some native speakers.

Re: How well do you know English?

It's my mother tongue, I'm terrible at grammar though. I never learned it in school except one year in 7th grade, we spent more time writng papers than learning how to write them. I always did badly in high school/college English because of my lack of grammar skills.

...

Every time I see a Chinaski post, like in this thread, I get really sad.
Huh... I used to get a happy feeling when I saw that he had posted, because his input was always either informative or funny, but now...

Re: How well do you know English?

It's like my second mother tongue, so somewhere between fluent and mother tongue.
I am not that sophisticated in it like e.g. masterclass and I don't like to write long essays here on MTF, but I understand almost everything which doesn't involve some heavy slang, both in British and American English.

I came to this forum expecting a lot of posters to not be as proficient in English (given the international identities of posters). How wrong I was. A Polish woman in Nathaliia writes almost as well as the girl next door. So it seems most of the folk here are pretty well educated and can construct more than simply coherent sentences, and with little in the way of noticeable 'gaps'. I'm guessing there is strong proficiency in writing skills and reading across the board, but perhaps not so much in speaking (though that is quite natural).

It still amazes me I get to talk to Swedes, Hungarians, Chinese, Romanians, Serbians, French, Brazilians etc. all on one forum in a language we all understand.

Actually I do remember explaining to you the meaning of 'piggy back' - which you considered an offensive phrase at the time

I don't know all the idioms in English, as everyone knows them all only in his/her mother tongue.

Re: How well do you know English?

The problem with this poll is that for those who don't know any English at all, they would not understand which poll option corresponds to "not at all". But of course they probably wouldn't understand the question.

The one poster who I did have to read several times to understand was Master Yoda.
