Agassi aims to make it five

Agassi aims to make it five
By Michael Warner
12jan04
ANDRE Agassi has slipped quietly into Melbourne in search of a fifth Australian Open tennis title.

The American superstar arrived with wife Steffi Graf and their two children at the weekend, settling in at an exclusive South Yarra hotel.

Tennis's first family wasted no time heading for their favourite Melbourne eatery, the Fiesta Mexican restaurant in Toorak Rd.

Owner Bill Billwani said the pair came in on Saturday night.

"It's always nice to see them. They feel very much at home here," Mr Billwani said.

"He is a very down-to-earth person with a lot of drive and ambition.

"I think he's got a good chance again but Andy Roddick will be his main opponent."

Roddick, the world's No. 1 player, also swept into town at the weekend for a crack at his first Australian Open crown.

The American young gun kicked off his preparations yesterday with a two-hour hit-out at Melbourne Park.

The 21-year-old is here without his pop star girlfriend Mandy Moore but it is believed she could make a surprise visit towards the business end of the tournament.

Agassi and Roddick will join the likes of Roger Federer, Sebastien Grosjean and David Nalbandian at the Commonwealth Bank International at Kooyong, starting on Wednesday.

Tournament spokeswoman Marie Kelly said Agassi, who held a private training session at Melbourne Park yesterday, traditionally kept a low profile in the days leading up to the event.

"That's the way he likes it. He just likes to slip into town and get into the swing of things," she said.

The defending champion has won three out of the past four Australian Open titles.

Home-town hero Mark Philippoussis has skipped the Kooyong event to play in the adidas International in Sydney.

The Scud resumed training last week after overcoming a muscle tear suffered in the Davis Cup final victory against Spain in late November.

Re: Agassi aims to make it five

I think the players most likely to give Andre some problems are Andy and Lleyton Hewitt.

For some reason, I don't see Federer going far at AO. He never does. And he's not playing any competitive tournaments before AO, which he should as a "warm up." If he plays well at AO, I'll be surprised.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Re: Agassi aims to make it five

Fed is 1000% unpredictable so who knows... he just played hong kong where it sounds like he didn't even really try too hard, and he's playing Kooyong...that's more prep than Agassi but Agassi is predictable LOL

Agassi doesn't need much prep, at least in terms of ball-striking. He gets back in form faster than anyone else I can think of. Scary actually.

Re: Agassi aims to make it five

yea exactly what I meant lol....

Even Fed fans said he wasn't trying against Ferrero the other day. I mean yes it is an exhibition but when you are playing against someone who's only ranked one spot below you and it's 2 weeks from the first slam of the season, I'd think you'd want to try... But yeah Agassi, well his early-season record speaks for itself!!!!!

Re: Agassi aims to make it five

Case you havnt noticed tangerine, Andy dosnt really give Andre problems. The 1 win was on grass, and that surface suits Andy's game better the Agassi's. Youre forgetting other obvious hard court players like shuettler(although i wouldent be confident since Agassi thrashed him last year in Australia, David Nalbandian plays well on this surface(i think its his best) Ferrero gives Agassi the biggest problems actually. Dont cont Fed out either, I think he'll actually try in Kooyong since Andy & Agassi are playing there. But i still think & hope that Andre wins here!

Fedex, I agree that Andre still has the edge over Andy, but Andy's getting better, and their last two encounters have been very tight. I think it's evening up.

But rebound ace seems to have been manufactured specifically for Andre's game, lol! So beating him in Australia will be tough.

I love reading about Andre and his family in dinner occasions.

Like father, like son

His been consistent in AO, falling in 5 setters in the 4th round a couple of times (blew a match point against Haas in 2002) and last year it was to that guy Nalbandian.

Whoever said Fed is unpredictable is right, he fell out 1st round in 2002 Wimbledon afterall.

Without a coach I sadly do not see Roger going too far in Oz. Unless he plays players who is very familiar with. Going into a major without a coach for a young guy is dangerous. Roger's loss to Haas was great one. Yeah he had match point but it was on Tommy's serve. His loss to David was disgraceful since he was up 4-1 in that 1st set. Can you believe he made 24 unforced Errors in that set. If Roger doesn't do well next week then I will really worry but I think he will try hard there. Like I said, its the one exhibtion that really should get a official ATP tour even label on it. Andre should make it at least to the Oz semis. I can't see him losing before then. I only hope Roger can make it to the qrts but without a coach I don't even see a 4th rd.

I believe that Andy will be giving Andre problems at AO THIS year because 1) Andy, as the No. 1 player, is feeling more confident in his game; 2) he's improved his game tremendously since his last outing at AO 2003; 3) he's beaten Agassi before so at least he knows it can be done; and 4) he made it to the semi-finals at AO last year.

But as bunk said, it's all unpredictable what will happen; I'm just making suppositions like everyone else. Perhaps Fed (also feeling more confident) won't crash out this year like he usually does; perhaps Andy will flame out; perhaps Nalbandian will sneak in and play brilliantly. Who knows? Either way, I'll be rooting for Andre to win again this year.
