So you've seen Andre play in person!

Just decided to start a new thread for people who would like to comment on what it was like seeing Andre play in person..

Were you surprised by anything about him or his game. i.e did he look bigger smaller, hit harder or move faster then you had previously thought from watching on tv?

And finally they say he hits the ball cleaner than anyone, did you sense this also? And if so what other players have you seen that could compare to him!

Re: So you've seen Andre play in person!

I have seen Andre play live only at the US OPEN for many years now.
I only had great seats once, so it's usually been nosebleed seats (like when he won the US OPEN vs. Martin) .. but still...you know from tv that he hits the ball hard,
you are still amazed at that when you see him live. He certainly moves very quick...
the excitement of the crowd is something that can only be experienced in person...there is such love and respect from the crowd and Andre
always acknowledges the fans and you feel the sincerity. I wish I could see him play in London, but I know I am lucky to see him at the US OPEN every year.

I saw Andre play live once, at Wimbledon 1998 against Alex Calatrava on Court One in the first round. He hit the ball so hard and won in straights! I saw him earlier that day, on the practice courts with Michael Chang, and he looked smaller than I thought in practice!!!

I've seen Andre in person, I saw all his matches last summer when he won LA, it was fun and exciting You can see my pics in the MTF photogalleries here if you want.

He does definitely hit the ball amazingly clean. The only person I've seen in person who I think hits the ball that cleanly is Lindsay Davenport.

Re: So you've seen Andre play in person!

Yes, I've seen Andre play in person three times. The ball striking is amazing. For some reason seeing him live makes you realize just how athletic these players are and how quickly things happen on the court. Andre's reflexes and ability to read the ball are remarkable. He seems to have moved to the ball before I even know where the ball is going! So it often looks like the other guy is just hitting it back to him.

Andre's kinetic chain during his strokes is so compact and efficient, and so reliant upon his perfect timing, that the ball seems to fly off his racquet faster than it should. It's like a magic wand or something...

I believe in luck. How else can you explain the success of those you don't like? ---Jean Cocteau

Re: So you've seen Andre play in person!

i saw him play 3 times (2003, 2004, and 2005) at the Siebel Open in San Jose- I was supposed to see him this year until he pulled out last minute. The first year he won the title match incredibly easily, so it wasn't that amazing to watch (he didn't have to pull out great tennis to win, but it was still nice to see him dominating). The next two years he lost before getting to finals, and he was playing really poorly (you know how once he's irritated, he often starts making a lot of double faults, stupid errors, etc?) everyone was really confused/ it was sad to see him in that state.. i'm still hoping to somehow get a chance to see him play at the quality the people above described!

i've seen him up close as well, and he does look pretty small/compact in person.

Re: So you've seen Andre play in person!

Hey...
I saw him playing in master cup 2000 in lisbon my hometown... and i can say it was really amazing, and he had bad luck in the final against guga, in that day guga´s backhand down the line was on fire, even with the help of the net, in one decisive break point... But i was near Andre like 2m away in one day that he was playing with kids, in smash tennis, and he was giving autographs after, but i was so frozen, that my brain stopped just looking to him, and i couldnt be quick to overtake all that people that just want his autograph, just to have... i really admire him, and it was a shame that i couldnt get it... Andre represente so much to me... it was defenely one of the best week of my life...
I hope and i belive that Andre will do good, and win something this year...
Go Andreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I had the pleasure of seeing Andre play at Queens 2004 when he lost to Andreev! I was sitting up high but still got a good look at the great man! Couldnt believe he lost that day but at least I can say I saw him live....

Hi have seen him play in Australia 1995, South Africa 1996 and US Open 2005. I was completely taken a back at his moment and his speed back then, His reflexes were unbelievable. As for the rest I was actually speechless as just could not believe that I was watching the king of tennis . memories that will last forever.
