qualify for Masters Cup :

With just three weeks of the regular 2005 ATP circuit remaining, competition for Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai is heating up. Going into Masters Series Madrid, only four singles players are assured of their berths at the spectacular new Qi Zhong stadium, leaving all those in contention fighting for crucial INDESIT ATP 2005 Race points in the coming weeks.

At present, only two-time defending champion and World No. 1 Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Marat Safin and Roddick have qualified for the singles. The remaining four singles spots will be determined by the final five ATP tournaments at Masters Series Madrid, Basel, Lyon, St. Petersburg and the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.

Among those hoping to make significant strides in Madrid will be Argentine Guillermo Coria, who is sixth in the INDESIT ATP 2005 Race, Russian Nikolay Davydenko (7th), Argentine duo Gaston Gaudio (9th) and Mariano Puerta (10th), Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero (11th), Argentine David Nalbandian (12th) and in-form Croat Ivan Ljubicic (13th), who is making a late charge with back-to-back titles in Metz and Vienna.

Re: Will Andre qualify for Masters Cup 2005?

Looks like Andre could qualify on merit without playing between now and Shanghai. Coria and Davydenko are his REAL REAL threats and I don't think they will score enough points. Looks good for Andre!

I definitely see Ljubicic as qualifying. He's on such a role now with two titles in Metz and Vienna!

Re: Will Andre qualify for Masters Cup 2005?

News : 2005

Nalbandian hopes to use Madrid Masters as springboard to Shanghai

Madrid (dpa) - David Nalbandian staked his claim on a possible last-minute place in the season-final Masters Cup as last year's finalist at the Masters Series Madrid took a step into the third round Tuesday.
With less than three weeks remaining before the November 13 start in Shanghai between the eight best players in the world, four qualifying spots remain unclaimed. Fifth seed Nalbandian took the first step towards possibly lifting one of them with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over Austrian Jurgen Melzer to book into the Madrid third round after an opening bye.

The 2004 losing finalist in Spain to Marat Safin could vastly improve his position in the chase with a title here; even a semi-final appearance would be of much use. "Mathematically I've got chances, and I think I can win this tournament. If I do, then I'll be close to the Masters," said the optimistic Argentine, ninth in the world and 12th in the race to China.

Common David!!!

Andre we are waitng for your best play in Paris 2005 too!!!

they are missing Andre in Madrid...

Is Andre already in?

They say so: Andre and coria are in...

notes on a draw sheet
Shanghai gets top field...

By Matthew Cronin, TennisReporters.net

New ATP chief Etienne de Villiers has to be thrilled about probable field for the Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai, which at this point, should contain Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Guillermo Coria and Marat Safin.

The eighth spot should be a dogfight between Nikolay Davydenko, Gaston Gaudio, Mariano Puerta, with Richard Gasquet and David Nalbandian dark horsed for a spot if they perform well in Madrid and Paris.

Re: Will Andre qualify for Masters Cup 2005?

NOT YET! He's nearly there............Gaudio out of the draw in Madrid so if he wins Basel and Paris and Agassi doesn't play Paris Gaudio is a threat. Gaudio has lost his last 5 matches so Gaudio is out of the equation. Davydenko and Coria can qualify on merit without threatening Andre's Race Position. That leaves French Open Finalist Mariano Puerta, who is surrounded in drug controversy. However, Puerta is playing some really good tennis lately. He's in today's Madrid 3rd Round against David Ferrer, and whose to say he cannot go further? A win here or even a finals would threaten Andre. Then a good performance in Basel and Paris would destroy Andre's hopes. My gut feeling and hope is that Puerta falters today. I think if Andre gets a QF in Paris it will be ok. I really feel Andre needs match practice for Shanghai in Paris anyway. I think Andre will scrape in the final qualifying berth. If not, he is a GUARANTEED Reserve, which he didn't accept last year in Houston. Guillermo Canas was last years Houston reserve but wasn't needed. The last Masters Cup Reserve to play a match was Thomas Johansson in 2002 at Shanghai replacing Agassi. He lost to Federer.

Re: Will Andre qualify for Masters Cup 2005?

Agassi will qualify. Davydenko is no thread. He is losing to Ginepri now and he if he wins next week he even does not have passed Andre. I am sure Andre plays Paris. There he will do fine just as the rest of the year he already played.

Re: Will Andre qualify for Masters Cup 2005?

All - Coria, Puerta & Davydenko have lost in Madrid today...
Bad luck for them

But the chances of Andre for
year-end Shanghai "trip" have increased, fans...

What he needs now - just a good play in Paris!

if he won't play in paris then it will be very hard to win anything in shanghai. He must have some match practise before such a big tournament.

Re: Will Andre qualify for Masters Cup 2005?

According to BBC Radio, Agassi will fly into Paris on Tuesday to begin practice for the final ATP Masters Series Event of the year. He will then fly directly to Shanghai after Paris and play the Masters there.
