What was up with those mind games in the AA vs Nadal final

After reading Andres interview after that match, I decided to look at nadals antics and see what Andre was on about.

Second time round watching this match and I must say I've never seen anything like it..

#1. Match starts.. AA walks out to the net for coin toss. Nadal stays seated. AA walks over bewildered looking at nadal from the net.. Then Nadal jumps up like a boxer.

#2. AA wins toss and chooses to receive. When he walks out to begin the match.. Nadal stays seated. AA then sits down as Nadal decides to get up.. The croud begins to laugh because AA is Emulating Nadal..

#3. This is the thing that I find the weirdest.... During a change over. The umpire called time, but AA looked over at Nadal and noticed that he was not getting up.. so AA stayed seated.. Nadal got up after 30 seconds or so... I've never seen something like that where the players stay seated that long after the umpire calls time and its certainly not something AA normaly does....

4# Nadal changed rackets a few times during a game!

5# During a game where AA was serving he called for a new pair of shoes.. Maybe this was legit! I think AA double faulted and lost that game.

6# During a long rally in the 3rd set AA was 15-0 and asked the Umpire to tell nadal to go at his pace... AA then double faulted and missed some sitters....

What do you think was going on there... I think i remember reading something about Moya not liking AA, and Moya is friends with Nadal?

Your opinions people!

Re: What was up with those mind games in the AA vs Nadal final

I think it's a tactic of Nadal to let Andre play at his own pace.... We all know how Andre liked to play fast, he did not want to dawdle and fuss after every points...I swear if Nadal is wearing additional clothing aside from his clothes and socks, he will find a way to touch them....maybe to make sure it's still there....lol....

as for Carlos Moya not liking Andre, I don't think it's true...

My mistake about Moya..... I mixed him up with Rios.. I always mix their names up for some reason.. My mistake... :-|

Re: What was up with those mind games in the AA vs Nadal final

Nadal was definitely into gamesmanship big time...others call it just being smart about competing...but it looked childish, I thought. But at the end of the day, Nadal earned the victory...and if I'm reading things correctly, lost the respect of a number of people, including Agassi.

You can see the advice coming from Uncle Tony...don't let this guy intimidate you...you have to throw him off his game, his timing...the awful, mean stares and the poking around...changing this and that...whispering to the umpire, like he was requesting a trainer...and then not...

The worse thing for me were the EXAGGERATED fist pumps...at first, it was kind of cute...then it became tiresome....then just plain ugly!!

I had been looking for this "bright young star" to kind of keep tennis afloat.

But after seeing the way Nadal behaved to gain the edge to win one match against someone he should have had too much respect for to even think about behaving that way, I was gravely disappointed.

I am sure Nadal has and will have a lot of fans...I won't be one of them. What a classless thing to do!

Yes, it was Rios who "had it in for Andre."

I think maybe Nadal will out grow some of this behavior. He hardly needs it to win.

Too bad Andre had to play twice on Saturday, might have been different ending....

what about Andre telling Nadal he was glad to play him before he retires

"Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" .. Madonna

Drooling after Schuettler, Bolelli, Volandri, Starace (short haired version), ToJo, Tursunov, Alves, Davydenko, Djokovic, Petzschner, Ferrero, Simon, Qureshi

it is like nadal is ushering andre into retirement....i dont really like nadal although some think he is the next best thing.... i dont like his game and the fist pumps...i would rather watch richard gasquet who's got a beautiful game and showed he respected andre when they last played though he lost...

Well its good to know that I'm not the only one that thought what NAdal was doing was a bit shitty! It shows just how much respect Nadal has for Andres ability if he feels that he has to try intimidate Andre to win.

It certainly did get up Andres nose... The amount of times Nadal changed rackets while Andre was waiting to serve was unreal.. I've lost huge respect for Nadal and I look forward to Andre meeting him in the USOPEN where I'll bet any money AA will punish him.

Go Andre!

Where are Nastase and Connors and Lendl when you need them?

Not one of them would have put up with Nadal's gamesmanship without a well-aimed ball to "get his attention." Maybe give the capri pants a "new Look"

Ahhh!! Those were the days...or NOT!!

Re: What was up with those mind games in the AA vs Nadal final

well, sometimes andre is being too nice to his opponent... you're right jcm, jmac, nastase and connors will not put up with such antics....

call me crazy but i'd like to see andre do some of what roddick did today in his match against jcf, argue with the umpire to assert himself and what he think is right... it does good sometimes, keep the player pump up...(act like a diva, if you know what i mean, lol)...

No I think those days are over for Andre.. He now lets his racket do the talking. I think Nadals antics will give AA even more determination to play his best.. (if that possible..) Nadal definately distracted AA allright. Saying that it was a great match and the better player won on that day. I'd love a rematch! I think it would be increadable!
