I wouldn't worry about those 2! hahaha! Like I said, my Spanish is very poor and although if I should understand anyone it would be Fernando, he still rattles at times . And I heard lots of names and he was laughing. Maybe the : and that's the truth bit is about something completely different. So, unless we hear about it again somewhere else (paper, interview, magazines) I'm sure there's nothing going on!

Ohmigod....I cannot believe you not only talked to him...but you touched him!!!!
Well, that's the easy bit! Just ask for a picture, move closer and hold! And should you see Fernando, go to him and ask! He's very easy going! I mean, he was chatting to this girl, watching the match a bit and everyone got their autograph and picture. Not a problem! Unlike some others I saw........

Re: ~*~Fernando's Wonderful Chatworld~*~

Dafne wasn't there, true. Patricia was!!! Dear oh dear!! That girl will get an ulcer if she's not careful!!! She just cannot sit still!!! She was at every JC match. One match she sat one side and coach on the other, maybe that's why they thought she wasn't there. But she was...she even made me nervous!

Didn't see her at Marat's match. She was at Tommy's though. A little more relaxed than usual

Re: ~*~Fernando's Wonderful Chatworld~*~

Thanks Lady Carlita - just read the first part of your diary. I love all the excitement of tennis trips! And of course, checking out the practice courts is a priority. Glad to hear that Fer was so nice to you - and El Gato to his fan!

I have to say though, I'm not usually into 'cowd pleasers' tennis players - well, my fav is Mr Rios So I am never bothered if a player never stops for an autograph or a picture at a tournament. I look at it that they are 'at work', and they don't 'owe' anyone any of their time while they are working. Having saif that, though, I do appreciate how thrilling it is for fans when their fav is kind to them and I like reading their encounters.

I think for me the most talented of all times was (Marcelo) Rios. Marat Safin, 2004

Marcelo has an enormous talent. Gaudio, RG champion 2004

"Rios ... he has a beautiful game, great forehand and great touch," Federer, World number 1

Re: ~*~Fernando's Wonderful Chatworld~*~

I rarely ask for a player's autograph - although with Rios, I've been lucky, 4 out of 4 attempts, and he's been a sweetheart each time. Only other players I've ever asked are Gaudio, Nalbandian (well, I couldn't ask for Gaudio's and not Nalbandian's while he was next to him, could I?), Safin's and Fed's. Oh, and Massu and Ferdy. I think Fer is the most out-going player I've ever beein interested in LOL!

I look forward to the next installment! btw, where are you from Lady Carlita?

i know what u mean...although i still get annoyed when i see players being rude to fans. they are after all role models and if it weren't for the fans paying to come to the tournament and supporting them, they wouldn't be where they are and i think some of them tend to forget that

A lot of people say that, I have to humbly disagree. Its one of the most important things for me. If a player isn't nice to their fans, I don't think I would be a fan of theirs.

On the "emotional" side - These guys are doing something they anyone in the world would love to trade places with them. And they make a lot of money just to hit a little fuzzy yellow ball around a court. Fans spend a lot of money and time rooting for their favorites.

On the "practical" side - A lot of the money they make come from sponsorships. And sponsors choose a player based a lot on their popularity as well as how well they do and how often the fans will see them (in both fans are an important aspect) - they hope that the fans that like the players promoting their products will actually buy their products. So being nice to fans, who go and buy the products they are promoting, equals money to the players. And its a boatload of money.

Obviously some fans are obnoxious and the players shouldn't have to deal with that. Or fans that bother them just before a match when they are trying to concentrate. But I rarely see too many obnoxsious tennis fans at tournaments. And fortunately not too many players who aren't nice to the fans.

Haven´t posted here for a while, but will definitely in the future

And I can only repeat the things Sjoukje said: Nando is such a great guy and I like him even more after this tourney. He is so easy going and nice, way different to some other guys!!! He really does everything for his fans and I had to think a lot about one article someone had translated here where he said so positive things about his friends

I read also your blog, Sjoukje, and all the very great memories came back
It was so great to meet you and also Reiko in Barcelona

Re: ~*~Fernando's Wonderful Chatworld~*~

Nicofan - I know I'm out on a limb with my views. I really do think the players deserve some peace when they are doing their 'jobs'. I think it's ok to approach and ask for an autograph at the end of a practice session - not before, because their time there is valuable, and certainly not during, as I have seen at times. But if they don't sign, it's no big deal for me. same for all sports stars really.

The thing that does bug me is the tennis players who 'pretend' to be fan friendly when there's a camera or journalist around, and then are unpleasant to their fans when they can get away with it. And I've seen some big 'fan friendly' players doing it. I can tell you, I've seen Nico being vile to fans. Doesn't bother me, but it did upset a friend of mine.

I think for me the most talented of all times was (Marcelo) Rios. Marat Safin, 2004

I've also stayed in the Player's hotel in Monte Carlo - and I would never have dreamt of bothering a player there. But it was nice having a (hopefully) discreet gawp

Btw, there's a big difference for me in being rude to a fan than being indifferent/refusing an autograph.

[QUOTE=JenriosI've seen Nico being vile to fans. Doesn't bother me, but it did upset a friend of mine.[/QUOTE]

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about what the players should do....lol!

And I'm sure Nico hasn't been nice to fans at all times. But from what I've seen of him during 3 years of the USO...and last year for 10 straight days of watching his practices and matches both singles and doubles...he was always very nice to the fans. In fact signed autographs and let people take his picture for far longer than most of the players did...never was not nice, had a smile on his face, very patient. One time, the bodyguards were telling him to leave, and he just ignored them and kept signing autographs.

I've heard fans complain about players you would never think of being not nice, but when you hear the entire story, you can see why the player wasn't nice. Going up to them right after they lose, when they're trying to get to the court for their match, etc. And again, maybe they're just having a bad day...don't we all have our moments...

exactly, which is why it never bothered me. The worst Nico incident was at RG in 1999. It was really rude - I made a joke out of it, saying 'he's not famous enough to diss anyone'
