Exempts are based on a combination of age and matches?

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2015]

Exempts are based on rule 1.08 from the rulebook:

Quote:
A player’s number of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments shall
be reduced by one (1) tournament for reaching each of the following milestones:
1) 600 matches* (as of 1 January of the commitment year);
2) 12 years of service;
3) 31 years of age (as of 1 January of the commitment year).
If all three (3) conditions are met then the player has a complete exemption
from the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 player commitment.
The first Year of Service shall be the first calendar year in which a player has
competed in at least twelve (12) tournaments offering ATP ranking points.
* From 2010 only main draw singles matches played in the following events
will be used in the player’s match count for purposes of this rule.
ATP World Tour
Barclays ATP World Tour Final
Grand Slams
Davis Cup
Olympics
Challenger and Futures matches played prior to 2010 will remain on the player’s
record as relates to this commitment reduction rule.
and 9.03.B.NOTE:

Quote:
*NOTE: A player who is eligible for a reduction of his ATP World Tour Masters 1000
commitment tournaments per Section 1.08 who withdraws prior to the withdrawal
deadline and uses his exemption may have the number of his results from all other
eligible tournaments in the ranking period, that count for his ranking, increased by
one (1) for each milestone reached with a maximum of three (3).

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2015]

Since there is no point making a new thread, gonna convert this one for 2016. The lists have been updated with the 2016 year start values. Biggest changes are that now Djokovic is allowed a second exempt and Wawrinka a third.

Also, there is a new rule this year, but which will be fully applied in 2017. And I quote:

1.08.C:

Quote:
C. A player may not use his commitment reduction to withdraw from an event if he withdrew in any manner (including a late withdrawal or an on-site withdrawal) from the
same event the previous year.*
*This provision is in effect beginning with 2017 events relating to withdrawals from the same 2016 events.
So, the OP will contain all player withdrawals from Masters events in any form in order to keep track of the tournaments they won't be eligible for exemption in 2017.

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2016]

@Slasher1985 Interesting change. I guess it is done so players are forced to not abandon a Mandatory altogether for the rest of his career. I wonder though, with new exempts applied for this year, what happens if a player who has already used 2 VEMEs last year (I think Ferrer was the best example), then he uses 2 again this year before those exempted Mandatories come again during the year (say Ferrer skips IW and Miami, I think creating 4 exempts in total)? Are they still allowed to do that or are they only allowed 3 exempts on their ranking at a time?

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2016]

@zjtennis

The exempts reset at the start of the year, not during a 52 week period, just like the commitment (they apply to a season of Masters tournaments, not to a period of time). That is because the figures which allow the exempts are recalculated at January 1st (number of matches played, age of the player and service years).

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2016]

@Slasher1985 What I meant is that how would it affect the 52-week rankings? Ferrer currently from what I know has 2 exempted Masters, and now have 3 new for the year correct me if I'm wrong. If he chooses to skip Indian Wells and Miami, does the 52-week rankings also reflect those exemptions, making his 52-week rankings after Miami less than 4 Mandatories? Sure it doesn't matter that much for the year end but what about the current rankings?

Like I said, the fact that he was exempted twice in 2015 has no bearing over 2016 exemptions. And 2016 exemptions will have no bearing over 2017 exemptions, unless they are at the same exact tournament. A player could have 6 exemptions in a 52 week period without any problem, just like he could have 8 0-point penalties in ATP 500 tournaments without any problem.

Difference from penalties though is that exemptions are not reflected in the rankings in any way, because the tournament which is exempted is not shown at all. It's like the player didn't make the main draw entry list. No impact.

Oh, so a player could potentially have 4 Slams + 14 Non-Mandatories (+ 1 WTF) maximum in a single rankings period? That seems a bit too much of a leeway, like say I could skip the last 3 Mandatories in 2016, then skip the first 3 Mandatories in 2017 and I don't get penalized. Wonder if they could change the rule in the future that the 52-week rankings could only reflect 3 exempts at a time. Sure it would look weird if the Race doesn't reflect the Rankings (I am assuming in this case the Race would still consider the exempt as counted, hence any non-Mandatory adjustments would reflect at the Race but not at the Rankings) but it seems a bit too much to have a potential 6 out of 8 Mandatory Masters be not counted at the rankings due to this rule.

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2016]

I really don't see a problem here. There are few players with 3 exemptions on a calendar year and they usually are players who have played many tennis matches during their career. If they choose to skip 6 mandies in 52 weeks, it only leaves room for the younger, more inexperienced guys to try their luck. The ATP has thought this through.

Remember that this is only ranking wise (3 maximum exemptions). Money wise (fines), players can skip all Masters if they qualify for 3 exemptions. They have a free pass. If Federer wanted to skip the whole Masters season, he could do it without paying any fine. It's clear that the ATP wanted to reduce pressure on the players to constantly play all the tournaments, something like before 2000, but with much better control on the rankings.

Re: ATP Masters 1000 Player Exempts [2016]

Slasher thanks so much for those lists : they are hugely precious for me

As far as zjtennis' question is concerned and as far as ATP rankings are concerned, I personally think that considering 9.03B note, it's impossible to have more than 3 additional optional results added in the rankings breakdown through that rule.

Even if yes, by calendar effects, it may be possible to have more exemptions in 52 weeks than what a player is theoretically allowed (anyway, a player who respects all 3 rules is allowed an exemption of all mandatory Masters 1000tournaments, not just 3 ... but imo he's only allowed 3 additional optional results because of 9.03B note).

useless old guy
