Good point

I remember reading that in 1988 the winner of the Italian Open only received 3 more ranking points 203-200 compared to the finalist.

Anyone remember Kafelnikov getting to no.1 after a 7 loss streak

Welcome to MTF...

The best would be a 32 man all time GOAT tournament.

1st round:

(1) Roger Federer vs. (32) Guillermo Vilas
(16) John McEnroe vs. (17) Henri Cochet
(8) Jack Kramer vs. (25) Mats Wilander
(9) Bjorn Borg vs. (24) Stefan Edberg

(4) Bill Tilden vs. (29) John Newcombe
(13) Fred Perry vs. (20) Laurence Doherty
(5) Pancho Gonzales vs. (28) Reggie Doherty
(12) Ellsworth Vines vs. (21) William Larned

(3) Don Budge vs. (30) Rene Lacoste
(14) Jimmy Connors vs. (19) William Renshaw
(6) Ken Rosewall vs. (27) Lew Hoad
(11) Ivan Lendl vs. (22) Tony Wilding

(7) Pete Sampras vs. (26) Novak Djokovic
(10) Rafael Nadal vs. (23) Boris Becker
(15) Andre Agassi vs. (18) Bobby Riggs
(2) Rod Laver vs. (31) Ilie Nastase

I dunno about you, but I'd buy tickets.

I agree about Budge. Kramer at 21st place was not fair actually, but hes not a top 10 IMO. Maybe between Lendl and Vines (number 11).

Some years, yes. But in Kramer's year, he clearly deserved his #1, seeing as he went H2H with his best rivals 50-100 or more times per year.

Vilas getting robbed of the '77 #1 was a travesty, in my eyes, he was #1 that year.

(2) Rod Laver vs. (31) Ilie Nastase

My predictions for this would be, for AO, RG, Wimbledon, USO, and some fast indoor surface, assuming peak form for all players:

AO:

Fed def. Vilas in 3
McEnroe def. Cochet in 4
Kramer def. Wilander in 4
Borg def. Edberg in 5

Newcombe def. Tilden in 5, big upset
L. Doherty def. Perry in 5, minor upset
Gonzales def. R. Doherty in 4
Vines def. Larned in 4

Budge def. Lacoste in 3
Connors def. Renshaw in 5
Hoad def. Rosewall in 5, minor upset
Lendl def. Wilding in 5

Djokovic def. Sampras in 5, Pete never comfortable in Australia
Nadal def. Becker in 5 epic sets, Rafa wears him down on slow HC
Agassi def. Riggs in 5 more epic sets
Laver def. Nastase in 4

R16 at the AO:

Fed def. McEnroe in 4
Kramer def. Borg in 5
Newcombe def. L. Doherty in 5
Gonzales def. Vines in 5

Budge def. Connors in 5
Hoad def. Lendl in 5
Djokovic def. Nadal in 5, we saw this one already
Laver def. Agassi in 5

Almost all 5 set matches

QF at the AO:

Fed def. Kramer in 5
Gonzales def. Newcombe in 4
Hoad def. Budge in 5
Laver def. Djokovic in 5

SF at the AO:

Fed def. Gonzales in 5
Laver def. Hoad in 5

F:

Laver def. Fed in 5, epic match of all time.

Now, bear in mind if we played 10 AO's, we could probably get 10 different champions from this epic draw, RG would probably be split between only a few guys, Wimbledon, USO, and random indoor court would also be split. My prediction is only 1 of many possible scenarios.

RG:

Vilas def. Fed in 5
Cochet def. McEnroe in 4
Wilander def. Kramer in 4
Borg def. Edberg in 3

Tilden def. Newcombe in 4
Perry def. L. Doherty in 5
Gonzales def. R. Doherty in 5
Vines def. Larned in 4

Lacoste def. Budge in 5 epic sets on the Parisian clay
Connors def. Renshaw in 5
Rosewall def. Hoad in 4
Lendl def. Wilding in 5

Djokovic def. Sampras in 4
Nadal def. Becker in 3
Riggs def. Agassi in 4
Laver def. Nastase in 5

RG R16:

Cochet def. Vilas in 5
Borg def. Wilander in 4
Tilden def. Perry in 5
Vines def. Gonzales in 5

Lacoste def. Connors in 5
Rosewall def. Lendl in 5
Nadal def. Djokovic in 4
Laver def. Riggs in 5

RG QF:

Borg def. Cochet in 4
Tilden def. Vines in 5
Rosewall def. Lacoste in 4
Nadal def. Laver in 4

RG SF:

Borg def. Tilden in 3
Nadal def. Rosewall in 4

RG F:

Nadal def. Borg in 5, epic all time match

1977 and Vilas is one thing, I completely agree there, but there was nothing wrong with the ranking in 1999. Nobody deserved #1 more than Kafelnikov at that particular moment. His closest rival at the time, Sampras, played poorly throughout the same period, until he won Queens and relegated Kafelnikov. Then he himself was relegated by Agassi after Wimbledon.

To see Nasty Ilie upset Laver a RG would be pretty epic

Carpet would have been epic

Sampras v Becker was always great. Those two would destroy Nadal and Djokovic in 1R
Borg v Edberg would have been epic, McEnroe would take Federer IMO, another classic.
Lendl was Great on carpet, v Budge would have been fun

Very unlucky draw for some. Federer out in RG R1? Ouch! In W, you have Sampras beating Djokovic, Becker and Laver just to get to the SF, while Fed will have to dispose of McEnroe and Borg to reach the same stage. Tough!

Wimbledon would be the closest. Sampras would blast Becker IMO, Djokovic also, laver he would beat, Sampras was too good. Mind you Perry v Docherty would be sweet also

What am I thinking sampy v laver is too close!!
