Re: Benoit Paire
Not a classic match but a win is a win, and after nearly 3 months off, I'll take it. 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 over Montanes, R2, Casablanca.
Ben was better than I expected at times, but quite up down over the whole match. He ranged from poor to hitting some excellent winners – some lovely backhands down the line, a few great lobs, and some really fine drop shots. Montanes level was fairly poor throughout most of the match.
Ben could have won in 2 - he was a set and a break up, and served for the match leading 5-4, but was broken to love. He made a bit of a mess of the end of the 2nd set and smashed his racquet, but did enough to hold it together in the 3rd, helped by Montanes not playing well.
Ben's movement seemed ok but he was playing a lot of serve and volley, trying to keep points short at times. Not sure if that was about his lack of fitness, or if it was tactical. It was effective, either way. He played with his left knee strap on, but took it off early in the 3rd set and sprayed something onto his knee.
Can you get spray on painkiller? I guess it would numb the area or something. Anyway, hopefully nothing serious.
