I think Benoit deserves a thread.
He is just 20, has won several futures tournaments and is ranked 611th
He is playing RG qualies this week
1st round against Giovanni Lapentti and he won the first set 6/3
I miss Benoit, but if he's this injured he shouldn't try to rush the return. Hopefully he's 100% fit again soon and back on the tour, even if he's probably lost his dubs partner to Slam stardom.
It's hard to know if the pain he feels is part of the healing or if it's new damage. Before Monte Carlo the doctors
said Ben's knee was healing, but he worries he's doing more damage because of how much pain he has and because of the
relapse he suffered after playing the Aussie Open.
After Barcelona, Lionel said they were going to do more tests/ scans to see if there was any new damage or not.
Fingers crossed it's just normal healing. I remember Tsonga a few months ago, playing through a lot of pain and he had
the same knee injury. Hopefully this is not another setback for Ben.
Oh dear... he might need surgery on the knee. He is definitely withdrawing from Rome and says there are 2 things they can try before an operation.
He's going to have infiltration injections next to the tendon in his knee to try to be ready for Roland Garros. He will be on crutches for at least 6 days.
Come to think of it when he first talked of the knee problem he said he might be out of the AO. Maybe he rushed back a little fast. But still, I'm grateful he did. I got to see him live twice, and in one of those matches at least he played very well . The other one...well I could look at his beautiful face close-up .
Yes, he definitely came back too soon, although it seemed the doctors said it was ok to do that. Similar story recently, where he kept feeling lots of pain, but the doctors said he should play through it. A couple of weeks ago they discovered part of his tendon hadn't healed properly and he was considering surgery. But he's had an infiltration injection in the back of the knee since then (ouch) and it seems to have helped.
The doubles wasn't a classic today - he and Gael lost - but it was great to see Ben playing for more than 10 minutes and without pain. Hopefully this will continue now and he can start to get something out of the season. He's missed pretty much half of it already with injury.
I spoke too soon. Ben said he felt a little pain today and seems worried about it. He doesn't know if it's normal recovery pain or not. He's going to have tests in Paris and if there's any risk of causing more damage to the knee he won't play Roland Garros.
This is a real shame for him because he seemed a lot more optimistic when he arrived in Nice, feeling like he was starting to recover after he had the latest injection. Just no luck this year at all.
