Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Another great win by Fognini over Garcia-Lopez. He is really on a roll. His shot-making has been superb, and I've never seen him play this consistently well.

He's advanced to the 4th round now...his best result in a major.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Yes Last 16 a career best at a slam, and hopefully it continues to the QF. Any idea where Fognini goes in the rankings after last 16?

40-45, somewhere in that area. Montanes next, winnable but it will most likely be a very closely contested match.

Filippo VOLANDRI, Pablo ANDUJAR, Yuki BHAMBRI, Fabio FOGNINI, Thomaz BELLUCCI,
Santiago GIRALDO, Donald YOUNG, Gael MONFILS, Juan Martin DEL POTRO, Alexandr DOLGOPOLOV

Simon|Mathieu|Falla|Bolelli|Kyrgios|Verdasco
Monaco|Garcia-Lopez|Dancevic|Granollers|Cilic|Schwank

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

He pulled out of Wimbledon at the last minute. All those who mocked him saying it was cramp are put to shame really. The injury seems quite serious. I hope his late decision to pull out means he will be back jusr after the tournament though so he can build on his career best ranking (it will go down now as he cant defend Wimby points).

You are right, Champion. The media didn't help either...many in the US media persisted in repeating their false claim that it was merely a cramping issue.

All the best to Fabio...and quick healing.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio should be ok for Davis Cup. I so wanted this injury last until this stupid competition was over...

I think he should play a challenger this week or something to see if he will be ok?

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Might be a problem. I dont want him to start a match in Davis Cup then pull out injured. Would be best if he misses Davis Cup IMO.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio won both of his Davis Cup matches in his return from injury. He defeated Grega Zemlja 1-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 in the first rubber, and beat Aljaz Bedene 6-2 2-2 ret. in a dead rubber. He played OK in both matches, not great, but he says he's healthy and that is what is most important.

Now, Fabio is in Stuttgart and won his R1 match 6-1 6-4 over a 17 year old German WC Kern. He plays another German WC Stebe in R2, who beat Davydenko in three sets. A good opportunity for a QF for Fabio, but Stebe is a good young player and dangerous, so hopefully Fabio is on his game.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio lost 6-7(6) 4-6 to the young WC Stebe. Really struggled holding serve in the match. He was down a break twice in the first set but found a way to come back. He was down 3-6 in the tiebreaker and came back again, but lost on a backhand error. He led *4-2 in the second set and lost 4 straight games to lose the match.

This was his first official event in a long while so some rustiness and poor patches of play were to be expected. He plays in Hamburg next week.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

His 2nd round will likely be difficult against Granollers (or Chardy) so his form will need to improve after injury.
