Wild Card to the Rome Masters, he needs to win at least a match here for his confidence before RG, hopefully the draw is good.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Hopefully Fabio is finally fit and able to give his best this upcoming week. Also I hope the betting allegations haven't distracted him too much. He definitely needs a good week.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio plays Wawrinka in R1 of Rome. Winnable, but tough match. Wawrinka plays well in Rome traditionally but has lost 3 straight first round matches. If he beats Stan he could play Volandri in R2, but first things first, he needs to win his first match.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Yeah in the end this is a tough match considering his overall form, but he is a bit of a show-off so will really give everything to win this one and in front of his own fans this is winnable.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio lost to Wawrinka 7-6(5) 6-2 6-4. Fabio lead 5-3 in the first set, but from that point on, Wawrinka was the better player and more consistent. Fabio lacks confidence right now and he gets down on himself too easily. He really needs some victories.

He plays Gulbis in R1 of Nice, last event until RG. Hopefully he can put together a few victories to gain confidence at the French.

Lost again in 3. He needs to get back into form quick before the clay season comes and goes.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio has two R3s at RG and Wimbledon so he'll probably be out of the top 60 without decent results. Unfortunately he hasn't done a whole lot in the first half of the season, the second half of last year is where he got most of his results, he'll need to have a similar pattern this season.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Istomin will be a tough R1 opponent for Fab and even if he gets through the R2 will be too difficult against an in-form Berdych.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Istomin isn't in great form and it's a winnable match as he is not a clay courter. Obviously Berdych is a level above and based on the way Fabio has been playing, it's unlikely he'll win that, but who knows, he does usually do well when least expected. Most important is he gets one win and defends some of his points.

Fabulous Fog Easy win over Istomin. Surprised it was so comfortable. Normally Fabio makes it hard for himself.

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

After his surprisingly easy win over Istomin, Fabio's draw has miraculously opened up with Berdych's quick exit. And with Cilic out in this quarter as well, this tournament really presents a rare opportunity for Fabio to turn his year around and potentially even have an all-time result in a major.

Given Fognini's year so far, who could have foreseen this? But the opportunity is in front of him.

He definitely has a decent shot at making R3 first and foremost. Robert will be on a high, but also tired after his epic win.

Excellent win from Fabio. 62 61 60. Defended his points from last year, and now a possibility to go even further!?!

Re: Fabio Fognini - The Hope of Italy

Fabio played brilliantly today. There was a stretch...particularly in the second set, I thought...that he was on fire. He played with great variety, and all of the elements of his game blended together beautifully.

Granted, his opponent sprayed a lot of balls, and demonstrated the classic poor performance following a big win, but that doesn't take anything away from Fognini's magnificence. This was among his best performances ever.

Go Fabio!
