The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks (the guy who wrote The Notebook and A Walk to Remember, I haven't read those books but loved the movie versions)

Re: Which book do you currently read?

Kristina, Celeste, and Juliana were all born into the Children of God cult, and from as early as three years old were mistreated and used as sexual beings. They were denied access to formal schooling, forced to wander the streets begging for money, and were mercilessly beaten for "crimes" as harmless as reading an encyclopedia. After being separated from each other and their mothers and forced to live in various missions with multiple foster parents, the sisters eventually managed to escape. In this startling exposé, they have come together to reveal in horrific detail the group that has destroyed the lives of so many. Their intertwining stories reveal a community spread throughout the world whose legacy of anorexia, depression, drug abuse, suicide, and even murder are impossible to erase. Together, the sisters found a strength that finally enabled them to uncover and free themselves from the shadows of their past.

I couldn't put this book out of my hand on Saturday and read it within a few hours. The three sisters are telling their story without hiding anything and it makes you just speechless to read what children have to go through in our world...

Jürgen Domian - Der Tag, an dem die Sonne verschwand (The Day the Sun Disappeared)

Quote:
For weeks, Europe has been in the grips of a heat wave. It is July. Temperatures have been up to 41 degrees Celsius. Then, at midday, the unbelievable happens: the sky goes dark, a gale with rain and hail comes up and the thermometer plummets to almost zero degrees. Then it begins to snow and by the afternoon it is pitch-dark. Lorenz watches all this in fascination from the window of his roof-top apartment. When he decides to go out of the house a few hours later, he is horrified to discover that all the people have disappeared. Is he the only person left on Earth?

Re: Which book do you currently read?

Really liked the last 2 books of Harry Potter... So I'm reading them again. Half-Blood Prince is a nice set up for Deathly Hallows, and Deathly Hallows is a bitchin-kickass-hell-of-a-terrific-really-really-good-bitchin-kickass-good book.

cobalt60: Stopping in the middle of #5 is actually stopping right before the whole thing wraps up nicely. The seven books are pretty much one big novel.

Me liked it a lot.
