Re: Football zone vol 6

why do teams persist with playing a high line against this attack, with peak Ferdinand maybe but not carthouses like Dawson, solid back four and two Df midfielders screening

I don't care what anyone say. He is the best player atm for me. Luis is the new Henry.

Definitely. Costa is doing well, but even ignoring the overall impact both have on the play of their respective teams, simply looking at the quality of the goals:

Suarez has scored stunning, impossible, quality goals. A lot of Diego Costa's goals were scrappy headers or tap ins. Suarez usually sets it up himself and finishes it as well.

He's everywhere and does everything for his team. Diego Costa is much more Atletico's end station. Big difference for me and why I rate Suarez #1 by far this season.

Robben, Ronaldo, Zlatan, Ribery and Messi can fight for the other spots. I have Diego Costa behind them even.

Well, even from a goalscoring perspective Costa has the edge this season, including his 7 goals in 5 Champions League matches. But that's not even the reason I think he's the best player in Europe this season, there are definitely better goalscorer than him. If you look at Atlético's squad, nothing in it suggests the ability to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid to the very end in La Liga or have a very realistic shot of eliminating Barca in the Champions League QF. There are two reasons for this:

-a great manager in Simeone, who has managed to take the absolute max out of his players and created an incredibly solid, hard to break down unit.

-Diego Costa, he's the one taking Atlético that extra gear above. He's everywhere on the pitch, he reaches seemingly impossible balls, he runs entire defenses ragged on a weekly basis; when Atlético lose the ball he presses opponents relentlessly. And of course it helps that he has also scored 30+ goals, as solid and compact at Atlético are they don't really create nearly as many scoring chances as Barcelona or Real Madrid, so they need a reliable finisher as well, which Diego Costa provides. Yesterday's performance at Athletic really summed up the work he's done this season.

I agree the world 'arguably' would have been more suited, it's hard to reach definite conclusions especially when the players in questions are playing in different competitions and have somewhat similar influence in their teams. Suarez has definitely been the best player in the Premier League this season, don't think many would argue here, the reason I'd have Costa above him for this season overall is that the latter has been performing great in the Champions League too (granted, not Suarez's fault he didn't have the chance) and in the biggest matches in the league against Barcelona and Real Madrid, while Suarez hasn't really had a massive impact against Liverpool's closest title rivals, although he will get the chance to in the coming weeks vs Chelsea and City - two matches where the PL title will be at stake basically.

Anyway, while consistency is important, the best player of the year 2014 should of course be decided by performances in the two biggest competitions held this year: the Champions League and the World Cup. Odds are it will end up being neither of these two, but rather Cristiano or Messi.

OT: How bad are Spurs and Sherwood ?

Fill-in-the-Draw (3): US Open 2014, Rotterdam 2013 and Geneva 2015 - 1 Slam, 1 ATP 500 and 1 ATP 250

Tennis Tipping (3): Veneza and Todi 2014 (with vn01), Knoxville 2015 (with Redkop) - 3 challengers; 7 finals lost

I'd advise anyone who hasn't yet watched a Liverpool match in the last months to see one. Beautiful football

The game bores me now

Lord knows I despise Fakervic, a truly detestable individual, but at least the guy has some balls. Murray is a pussy whipped man-child, an embarrassment to the human race and living proof that evolution isn't all that it is made out to be. If he had any dignity he would retire now rather than face further humiliation.

This.

I always followed them before, but this season I try not to miss a minute. Suarez is a magical player, but Sturridge, Sterling, Gerrard, Coutinho are special as well. Even Henderson. I remember him being all but written off when he just came in at Liverpool. But now you can finally see what they paid all that money for.

So it's not just me who thinks so.

About him as a player, I still think he's just average, nothing special. The thing is everyone in Liverpool seems to be friends, and everyone is giving 100% in every game and with such a team it's hard to look bad.
Henderson's had some excellent plays and assists this season, but overall he really isn't top class.

Flanno will lead the English to the promised land this summer. Amazed someone with as little ability as him is playing so well.

Also had to laugh at the PL chief exec Richard Scudamore calling Yanited's decline bad for the league. No mate, it's great.

Even if Reds win all their 6 remaining matches, they have to hope that ManCity loses at least 4, better 5 points to win the EPL. I'd love it, they were robbed of four points around Christmas, would be great if they won the Championship anyway.

Not true. If Liverpool win all their remaining games (one of which is against City), we win the league.
