There's only one Luis Suarez
You bloody legend. What a finish.
Diego Costa best player in Europe you said, Manuel? Definitely even? Not for as long this guy is playing in Europe.
Along with 21 assists.
Well, even from a goalscoring perspective Costa has the edge this season, including his 7 goals in 5 Champions League matches. But that's not even the reason I think he's the best player in Europe this season, there are definitely better goalscorer than him. If you look at Atlético's squad, nothing in it suggests the ability to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid to the very end in La Liga or have a very realistic shot of eliminating Barca in the Champions League QF. There are two reasons for this:
-a great manager in Simeone, who has managed to take the absolute max out of his players and created an incredibly solid, hard to break down unit.
-Diego Costa, he's the one taking Atlético that extra gear above. He's everywhere on the pitch, he reaches seemingly impossible balls, he runs entire defenses ragged on a weekly basis; when Atlético lose the ball he presses opponents relentlessly. And of course it helps that he has also scored 30+ goals, as solid and compact at Atlético are they don't really create nearly as many scoring chances as Barcelona or Real Madrid, so they need a reliable finisher as well, which Diego Costa provides. Yesterday's performance at Athletic really summed up the work he's done this season.
I agree the world 'arguably' would have been more suited, it's hard to reach definite conclusions especially when the players in questions are playing in different competitions and have somewhat similar influence in their teams. Suarez has definitely been the best player in the Premier League this season, don't think many would argue here, the reason I'd have Costa above him for this season overall is that the latter has been performing great in the Champions League too (granted, not Suarez's fault he didn't have the chance) and in the biggest matches in the league against Barcelona and Real Madrid, while Suarez hasn't really had a massive impact against Liverpool's closest title rivals, although he will get the chance to in the coming weeks vs Chelsea and City - two matches where the PL title will be at stake basically.
Anyway, while consistency is important, the best player of the year 2014 should of course be decided by performances in the two biggest competitions held this year: the Champions League and the World Cup. Odds are it will end up being neither of these two, but rather Cristiano or Messi.
OT: How bad are Spurs and Sherwood
