Re: Figure Skating
Okay, here are my impressions after seeing Europeans this weekend on TV.
They showed Slutskaya’s short program, the only short we got to see in the US. I think they showed it as a way of explaining how Slute won, considering her performance in the long. I really enjoyed the short, it showed all of her strengths and I loved her costume! I’m glad they changed the rules to allow pants again. I think they stopped that after the spandex bodysuit of Debbie Thomas. As for the scores in the long (no more anonymous scoring, please!!!) I think they were trying to give Slute a physiological boost for World’s when she faces the North Americans and the Japanese.
Poykio was lovely but you could see a real speed difference between her and Slute.
Liashenko needs to just give in and become a Rockette. For those of you who don’t know the Rockettes are a dance troupe known for their high kicks!!
Sebestyen, god how I hate that costume. I’ve hated it all season with the fire of a thousands nuns!!! And no more Carmen,... please I’ll be a good girl, I’ll eat all my vegetables, anything, just no one every again skate to Carmen.
Sokolova is, I think, the prettiest girl in figure skating. I like her soft style, but she’s just not consistent.
My least favorite discipline and I skipped over most of it mainly because the current crop of Russians just leave me cold, especially Petrova/Tik, I just never got them. Anyway, they once again showed “the fall”, cuz you can never get enough of Tatiana’s face slamming into the ice. Well, it was on opposite the SuperBowl, so I guess they needed some violence to compete.
Wow, the French were great! D&S were smooth, flowing and had great lifts. I really like what I saw, good luck to them at World’s. I don’t like this year’s program for N&K, enough with the Tosca already. (Please see my Carmen rant and substitute the word Tosca). It was if they were carrying around a sign that said “look at me, I am dramatically emoting” and god knows over emoting and ice dancing are made for each other, but even I have limits (yes, Israelis I’m looking at you) G&G leave me cold, they always have. One last thing, someone hold Sergei down and cut his hair.
The biggest change in skating due to the CofP, I think is the men. Now you shouldn’t be able to win just doing back crossovers, wave your arms a little bit and jump, jump, jump. This makes the North Americans more of a threat to Plushenko. Plushy has never been my cup of tea, but even I can see that he is now trying to be more of a complete skater, more power to him. Glad to see that Joubert has toned down the Yagudinisms. Brian should not try to be a karaoke version of Alexi. Very pleasantly surprised with Lindemann, like his program a lot. I know he had problems, but way better than the GPs and his choreographer seems to know what works for him. Such spring in his jumps, but will never be a top tier skater. Now my little Swiss Chocolate..Lambiel. I’m sure the surgery and loss of training time have had an effect. Thought he should have gotten higher base scores for the spins, what a joy to watch. I loved Lucinda Ruh and Denise B. because they brought something to the table that no one else could match. Must be something in the water in Switzerland. Do you think if we put skates on Roger and pushed him out onto the ice that he would spin like a top? Lambiel’s routine seemed a bit rushed to me and I think its because he doesn’t hold him moves and positions enough for them to feel finished, SL please get a tape of Buttle and take a look!
Well, that’s it, can’t wait for Worlds.
