Female circumcision is painful no matter what and it can resort in some very dangerous complications. The male version is not dangerous in that kind of way. It can result in scars and the like and is generally regarding as having violent repercussions.
A circumcised penis does have less feel than a non-circumsized one, however that's only just a minor difference.
The advantages of being circumcised are clear: better hygiene. The foreskin that gets removed can hold various bacteria that overtime might cause all sorts of problems, from rash to whatever else. Of course washing regularly limits that risk considerably and mostly people are not in immediate danger because of it. Circumcision is a precautionary measure.
The advantage of having circumcision as a newly born is that the operation is less painful then since the skin is soft and not fully developed. On adults, the surgery requires anesthesia and can result in a few days of considerable pain after the operation is performed, and of course there are larger risks with complication and whatnot since the organ is fully developed by then. For example if a newly operated individual gets an erection (which is normal since every male in the world has at least 5 erections every day) the pain can be quite discomforting.
FGM is disgusting. I don't feel particularly strongly about many feminist issues because I live a cushy life, but this one really gets under my skin.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I learn new things every day, especially the fact (?) that every male in the world has at least 5 erections every day...
As you all know, the Mars rover Curiosity just landed on Mars a few days ago, we're waiting for the first high res COLORED pictures as we speak. It should be amazing.
I didn't know about this.
Will you post the pics once they're available?
You are so knowledgeable.
