Re: Football Zone (Rodgers the new manager at Liverpool)
The 4 best teams in CONCACAF were all very disappointing in their World Cup qualifiers yesterday.
México and the US had very unconvincing 3-1 home victories over Guyana and Antigua & Barbuda respectively. Guyana has a population of approximately 750,000 people, and Antigua & Barbuda of 90,000 people.
Honduras, who had de-throned Costa Rica as the 3rd best team in the region and routinely beat México at home, lost 2-0 at home to Panama.
Costa threw away a 2-0 lead and drew 2-2 at home to El Salvador. Costa Rica used to play their home games at Estadio Saprissa (the Purple Monster), one of the noisiest and most intimidating stadia in world football.
Many US players were even more scared of playing there than at the Azteca in México. In fact the US NT lost all 7 qualifying matches they played there, while at least they got a 0-0 draw (and a standing ovation from the home fans) at the Azteca during the 1998 World Cup qualifiers. Now Costa Rica play their home matches in an olympic stadium with an athletics track keeping the fans further from the pitch; nowhere near as noisy or scary for visiting teams.
It's pretty amazing that over 80,000 people were at the Azteca to watch that México-Guyana game.
