Great goalie, but not the best one.

Anyway, Messi won it again. He's just from another planet. And he probably has one or two more in the bag.

This is just a "bum-lick Spain and its league's players" awards ceremony these days. I'm not interested.

Re: Football Zone

I like how last year Ronaldo's individual achievements were better, but Messi won the league so he won the Ballon d'Or.
This year Messi has better individual achievements and Ronaldo wins the league... and guess who they give it to.

It's a fix. And that best XI was a farce with all those La Liga scrubs.

Mess's individual achievements were better than Ronaldo's in 2011 as well. Ronaldo scored 54 goals in 2010/2011 compared to 53 for Messi. However Messi scored twice as many goals as Ronaldo in the champions league that year, 12 goals to Ronaldo's 6. Ronaldo hasn't outscored Messi in the champions league since 2007/2008 when Man Utd were the best team in Europe and Barça sucked under Rijkaard.

Messi was the man of the match in 2011 champions league semi-final first leg against Real Madrid, and also the man of the match in the final against Man Utd.

I do think it was ridiculous that he won the won award ahead of Sneijder and Xavi in 2010 though.

I also agree that the best XI is ridiculously dominated by Barça and RM players.

Re: Football Zone

I know a lot of Barça fans who think that Ronaldinho at his peak from 2004-2006 was better and more talented than either Messi or C Ronalo.

He was certainly more inventive and spontaneous and had better tricks. However he also liked partying too much and didn't train anywhere as hard as those two players. Plus they have both had longer peaks than him as well.

When Henk Ten Cate was Barça's assistant manager, he was the much needed bad cop who enforced club discipline in training and in general, while Rijkaard was the good cop and way too soft on the players. Ronaldinho still partied a lot at his peak and always returned to Barcelona late after playing for Brazil, but at least he turned up for training on time and did a lot of running on the beach.

When Ten Cate left Barça for Ajax in 2006, there was no discipline there anymore, with Ronaldinho and Deco either skipping training or turning up late after partying all night, and not working on their fitness at all. Plus there was a huge rift between Eto'o and Rijkaard and the 2006 champions league title had made many people at the club arrogant. Rijkaard believe in self regulation and that was a disaster.

Re: Football Zone

I'd love Iniesta to have won it, but Messi really is the best player in the world, miles ahead of anyone else so hard to argue there. While Messi is at his peak, everyone else is just fighting for second place. 4 Ballon d'Ors in a row with the fifth coming almost surely next year, never had a player in football history been so far above all his peers as Messi is now, unparalleled individual domination.

As for Team of the Year, the front 5 are not very open to debate, but Busquets should have been picked ahead of Alonso (or even Yaya, Pirlo... just not Alonso), and the back 5 should include no La Liga players.

I am mad on Pirlo's and Iniesta's behalf. This is nonsense.
