Okay let me set up the story.
Today, Syracuse (my school) played Rutgers (the school I live like 15 min away from in NJ) so... growing up near Rutgers, I have developed a severe hatred for that school because it sucks.
Syracuse, a school that has had a good basketball team for pretty much its entire existence, was on a 4-game losing streak. Rutgers has an AMAZING player Quincy Douby. Everything that guy shoots up goes in the basket cleanly.. doesn't even touch the rim. He has AMAZING accuracy.
So this was an incredibly important match for us, especially since with a 15-6 record we had just falled out of the Top 25.
It starts out good, we get ahead, midway through the first half Rutgers got away with a vicious foul on our superstar, you may have heard me gush about him, Gerry McNamara. The dude shoved him out of bounds and Gerry landed bad. As the man I have worshipped for the last 3 years writhed on the floor, grabbing his knee in considerable pain, the Carrier Dome was absolutely silent. Without Gerry, everyone was thinking "Oh my god, we are not going to win another game this season, this could end his season, and he's a senior.. this could end his career." He eventually got helped off the court to the bench where he sobbed into his towel and tried to hide his face and eventually was helped into the locker room. Gerry McNamara is everything in Syracuse, and in his hometown of Scranton. He will forever be a legend for scoring 6 3-pointers in the first half of the National Championship game and for scoring 43 against BYU to singlehandedly get us to the Sweet 16 the following year.
For the rest of the first half, I tried to cheer, I tried to care about the game but I was heartbroken thinking that of all the ways, that I had just witnessed the last time Gerry McNamara would play in the Carrier Dome and that it had to end LIKE THAT. Somehow we go into half time with a lead. Miraculous really.
I had the same awesome seats as the last game, second row. Those people are becoming my basketball friends now. It's the same people... EVERY game. We all sit in the EXACT same seats.
The second half is tight, but Douby is freakin' making EVERYTHING. The game had a horrible feeling to it. I thought for sure we were going to lose. The clock is winding down and we make our free throws to get 2 points ahead. Rutgers makes a shot AT THE BUZZER and we go into overtime.
During overtime it was incredibly tight the entire time, again we work our way up to a 2 point lead, then we do something stupid, turn over the ball and as the overtime clock is winding down Rutgers hits a 3 pointer. They are now one point ahead and there are 7 seconds left on the clock. Terrence Roberts, one of our big guys, NOT A GOOD OUTSIDE SHOOTER, has the ball and even though we only need a simple basket, shoots a 3-pointer. The student section is about to cry in agony when a miracle happens. THE BALL FREAKIN GOES IN. OH MY GOD. We were going NUTSSSS. After the basket there were .4 seconds left on the clock... with that basket TERRENCE ROBERTS SAVED THE DAY. He saved it for me, it saved it for Syracuse and he saved it for Gerry. Bless Terrence Robert's soul.
I apparently was on TV twice when they looked at the crowd
And the good news is (well not really good... better than expected news) that Gerry did not hurt his knee as we all feared. He was out on the bench during the second half and looked able to stand and walk short distances without being in pain. They are calling it a thigh injury. He hasn't missed a single game in his career here yet... I think he may miss one.. maybe 2 if any at all.. but it does not appear to be as serious as we all feared.
My throat is killing me because I was going nuts. Doubt scored 41 points. That was half of Rutgers total... but it wasn't enough to stop the mighty ORANGE today.
And with that, I will stop boring y'all.
