Re: (Road to the) Oscars 2010

Just saw Hurt Locker. Figured it must have something going to have so many nominations.

How could this non-movie be nominated for anything? Putting guys in heavy uniforms and have them stand around for two hours with rifles at their shoulders and looking tense has been done over and over in Vietnam.

Eventually, I fast tracked looking for the story line to commence, but just got more bomb defusing situations with guys with rifles on their shoulders trying to look tense.

No wonder one of the producers sent out begging emails. I can only assume this is another political nomination, totally unrelated to quality. Or maybe, like most teenagers, Academy voters just like to see things blowing up.

If that was the case Avatar would be sweeping instead and Transformers 2 would be nominated. And considering the amount of acclaim its gotten everywhere except the star-hungry Globes, I can only assume you dont like it because its going to beat one of your favourites on Oscar night.

Re: (Road to the) Oscars 2010

Wrong, I didn't have a favourite. I just think a remake of Platoon or Full Metal Jacket with sand replacing palm trees is a waste of time.

Avatar and Transformers were not sufficiently anti-US for Hollywood voters. Well, Avatar was, apparently, but not obviously enough.

But today I do have a favourite. Just saw Precious and was very impressed. The acting was superb, even Mariah Carey, and the story maintained my attention throughout. Monique was wonderful - she needs an Oscar. Best of the nominees I have seen, by a long way.

I found it a masterpiece by Blomkamp, the only movie out of the 10 contestants I rated 9/10.

To each his own. I don't judge movies by their political message.

Re: Oscars 2010

The political message is one of many factors. I'm usually not a sucker for SciFi-movies, not a fan of Star wars at all for example. What I liked about it was a.o. that it had also some humorous parts in contrast to Star Trek and Avatar.

"The Hurt Locker" is just another "americans are the good guys" movie like "armageddon" or "independence day". imo hollywood doesn't make themselves a favour if they make this the best picture.
