Is 'Das weisse band' really that good? Haven't seen it yet, can anyone tell me about it?

Re: (Road to the) Oscars 2010

It definitely is. One of the best German movies of the decade and in the same league like Downfall and Lives of Others. Directing and cinematography are outstanding, acting is solid. I don't want to give spoilers, but it's particularly recommendable if you're into mystery stuff. The fact that it's all black and white is a crucial factor for the ominous atmosphere.

Re: (Road to the) Oscars 2010

At the ALFS Awards tomorrow Waltz will pretty much for the first time be nominated against Clooney and Bridges as there is a Supporting Actor category only for British Actors. I think he's got a good chance to win it as his role is probably as main as it's supporting. Same applies to Mo'Nique, but her chances are way smaller than the Austrian's. No other nomination for IB, so they hand QT some achievement award as solace it seems.

After her Oscar chances are close to zero Carey Mulligan will 99% (1% to Blunt) win the British Actress Award and should have good chances in the Main Actress competition too, will be between her and Meryl. I think Mulligan will take them both.

Awesome to see Haneke and Audiard being nominated for Best Director, although they will probably take some votes from each other. So consequently it's gonna be another decision between Bigelow and Cameron, exactly the same scenario for Best Picture.

Hopefully Swedish director Tomas Alfredson' "soft horror"-masterpiece Let The Right One In, which has been snubbed on so many occasions, will take Best Foreign Picture.

Waltz took Best Actor Best Actress for Mo'Nique
LTROI won Best Foreign Film
British Actor Awards in main roles went to Mulligan and Firth as expected
Un Prophète won Best Picture over ; should give a boost to this movie's Oscar chances; Foreign Language Film is one of the most interesting categories this year, including at least 3 movies (Germany, France, Argentina) that in terms of quality would have deserved a Best Picture nomination as well
Bigelow takes Best Director
Fish Tank was the winner of the night

Deck, thank you very much for all the updates about all the awards that have been given lately. What's up with having so many contests and giving out so many awards I never knew there were that many. This reminds me of an Alvy Singer's quote from Annie Hall - "What's with all these awards? They're always giving out awards. Best Fascist Dictator: Adolf Hitler."

When I'm good, I'm very good...but when I'm bad, I'm better

Re: (Road to the) Oscars 2010

makes me think it's high time to rewatch Great Dictator

Here's a quite interesting article about Waltz and Mo'Nique being on course to achieve a clean sweep this year.

Firth and Bigelow won Bafta

I don't fancy Colin chances at the Oscars but Bigelow definitively has a chance. You go, girl

Clooney and Harrelson are spot on with their picks. Surprised nobody mentioned DDL in There Will Be Blood.
