Will Tim get further than 3rd Rd this year?

He beat Burgsmuller easily in the 2nd rd 6-0 6-3 6-3, but the 3rd round is usually his last.

He was interviewed at ESPN today and he said something like "I've had a lot of tight matches in the 3rd here at the French...this year is looking good..." I really hope he meets Roddick in the Quarters.

He meets Galo Blanco next, H2H is 1-1, with Tim winning the last one at Roland Garros (1st rd.) 2002. Both meetings were on clay.

Re: Will Tim get further than 3rd Rd this year?

I think if he plays like that then he should be able to edge past Blanco. His win against Blanco was close but nevertheless it was in straight sets and Tim has improved immensely on clay in the last two years whereas Blanco has somewhat diminished on all surfaces these past couple of years.

This is an immense opportunity for Tim to progress further than he has ever done outside wimbledon. Should he get past Blanco it doesn't even look like he has to worry about the awkward Spadea cos he's two sets to love down. It is likely that Benneteau will reach the 4th round, a very winnable match for Tim.

Andy Roddick won't reach the quarters...i would love him and Tim to meet each other because that would be an intriguing match but Roddick will fall to either Labadze or Chela i think.

It would be incredibly ironic if Tim's best Grand Slam performance outside Wimbledon came to be the French Open, the hardest slam of all to win matches in! That should silence his crticis for good, but it would only pile the pressure on him to win our slam, a slam he should effectively win if he can win a large number of matches on his worst surface!

Go get Blanco Tim!!!

Re: Will Tim get further than 3rd Rd this year?

I'm certainly happy about Tim's optimism (I'm feeling a bit down about Justine's upset), especially considering that virus that he's been suffering from. And that coming-back-from-two-sets-down win was definitely a confidence booster. I saw some highlights from his match today, and I must say, he looked pretty good. With regards to Blanco, about whom I don't know much, I think that Tim'll be able to pull through, seeing as he seems comfortable with and confident about his game. Looking ahead, way ahead, I'm hoping for Tim vs Andy, simply because we know just HOW much they both *LOVE* clay, eh? But no, seriously, it'd be interesting because their games match up nicely, and they always have interesting matches.
But hey, just this morning, I was looking all the way ahead to Justine vs Amelie, and look what happened to THOSE plans?
Anyway, good luck, Tim, and just take what you can get!

Re: Will Tim get further than 3rd Rd this year?

I think he has a good chance of getting to the 4th round for the first time. However, knowing Tim, his matches are rarely straightforward , but I know that he wants to take this chance, I just dunno whether his 'high expectations' may get to him and cause him to falter.

All the very best Tim.

Smoke him good!

Q. You must have so many different emotions going through your head. Was it like a rollercoaster for you?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, yeah, it's quite crazy..I never expect to win a Grand Slam.
I never dream about that because for me, I was not good enough to beat those guy.

Maybe the sky will fall?

You weren't the only one looking forward to that match. Don't worry, the Russians are still around.

I wouldn't be worrying, except for the fact that I don't really cheer for any of the Russians. But I'm totally supporting Amelie now!

And hey! Andy just lost. Upsets galore! But Mutis was pretty darn flippin' good out there.
So anyway, no Tim vs Andy now. I'm actually kind of disappointed.

As long as he doesn't start thinking too much about how the draw opens up he should be ok against Blanco.

Conan. He sure surpassed our expectations.
I'm tempted so look ahead to a QF with Chela, but Llodra here might just pull an upset in front of his home crowd. Hopefully Tim won't be booed incessantly for the silliest reasons.

yeah true - the Frenchies will be getting desperate now what with Grosjean out. Llodra could pull off a shock - he is great net player so Tim will find it difficult if he gets to the net first but i think Llodra is less strong on the baseline so Tim will want to get to the net quickest. A difficult match in prospect though and Tim will have to adopt different strategies. However, given the fact that Tim disposed of Llodra with relative ease at Wimby last year when he was playing horrendous tennis at times, Tim ought to win.

If he continues the phenomenal form he is in, especially the Roddick/Rusedski style serving (19 Aces!! ) then he could beat Chela and trouble Coria/Moya in the semis. If he gets to the semis, you never know, he might pull off a Verkerk style shocker, but i think that is more of a fantasy!!!

Anyway... Tim, the greatest Brit we have had in a long time! Critics - get lost!

Re: Will Tim get further than 3rd Rd this year?

Hats off to Tim for making the last 16 at RG for the first time in his career. With every tournament he seems to be getting better and better and more confident (and more happy ). This is really nice to see!

And this last group at RG is very interesting: I really thought it would be dominated by all the "clay court specialists" (ie, latinos) but with Safin, Federer, and Henman in the mix, it doesn't appear that the Spaniards and Argentines have a stranglehold on clay, which can only be a very good thing.

Henman advances to final 16 at Roland Garros

PARIS -- No. 9 Tim Henman reached the fourth round for the first time in nine appearances at Roland Garros by beating Galo Blanco 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-2.

The Briton took 1 hour, 58 minutes to finally move into the final 16 on his ninth visit to Roland Garros.

"In the past when I got to the third round here I was really excited that I won a couple of matches at the French," Henman said.

"But the state that my game is in now and the way I am playing I think I want much more out of it."

After taking the first set 7-3 in the tiebreak, Henman left Blanco, a quarterfinalist in 1997, reeling as he captured five games in succession to seal the second set.

The Spaniard gave his supporters a glimmer of hope when he broke Henman in the first game of the third.

However, the Briton broke back immediately before repeating the feat twice more to record a convincing victory.

Henman will play unseeded Frenchman Michael Llodra for a place in the quarterfinals.

The Briton has never gone beyond round four at any Grand Slam event outside of Wimbledon.

In other men's play, two-time runner-up Alex Corretja lost to No. 22 Juan Ignacio Chela 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

In the completion of a men's match suspended Thursday because of darkness, former U.S. Open champion Marat Safin beat Felix Mantilla 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 11-9. Play resumed at 7-all in the fifth set, and Safin converted his first match point when Mantilla sailed a backhand long.

Safin, seeded 20th, needed 24 minutes to close out his victory after playing for 4 hours and 15 minutes Thursday. He finished with 101 winners but also had 117 errors, including 40 in the final set.

The Russian advanced to the fourth round for the fifth time. He has yet to play in a French Open final.

Congrats to Andy Roddick, 2017 Hall of Fame!

I know, it's nice to see Tim so optimistic, confident, and comfortable about his game. It's really done wonders for him, this positive outlook that seems to have started around Paris TMS 2003. Hopefully he can get past Llodra. It's entirely possible! Go Tim! Yay!! And what about those NINETEEN ACES!! If he could serve like that at Wimbledon...

btw, tangerine_dream, I love your avatar! It's so cute!
