What does he mean by "too big a risk"? That Kiefer is lacking match praxis (on clay)? But surely not that he's afraid of Kiefer injuring himself right before a single's match. That would be ridiculous.

Oh well, it's sad, but not totally unexpected and hardly matters for this tie. If Kiefer continues to play decent tennis in the upcoming HC tourneys, then there's no doubt that he'll play in April against Spain.

if you got kicked like that would you really want to be in this team again??? kühnen planned this from the moment he choosed the surface and arena. Kiwi didn`t play on clay for nearly 2 years so this fact helps as an argument and he choosed Braunschweig right in front of Kiwi's house to make it hurt even more if he will not be allowed to play and the ankle injury just made the plan perfect! Kiwi said he is fit while Petzschner had to retire in a final last sunday!!! And Mayer lost in first round from September - January including a first round loss in Heilbronn CHALLENGER against a QUALIFIER (Challenger-Qualifier)!!! Why was Kühnen not honest?? Why didn`t he just say "I don't like Kiwi that's why I take Mayer! That would have made it a lot easier for Kiwi to plan his spring season.:mad::mad:

Well, he wants to represent Germany and enjoys being in the DC team, so yeah, it's humiliating, but if Kiefer continues like that and stays calm when asked about this decision, then no way can Kuehnen do this again when they play against Spain on a faster surface. Unless Haas decides to play, of course.

by the way... Kühnen only nominated 4 players and introduced Kampke as practicepartner. So who is the No 5?? The ITF Rule says 5 players have to be named and one day before the tie 4 of them have to be nominated... Is KAMPKE no 5?????:confused:That would be another hit into Kiwi's face...

Like four:love said it, I also think it is not surprising because I wrote and feared something like that already.

IMO the main reason for his decision is that the team was so succesful and happy without Kiwi last year and that Kiwi wasted a very good chance in February 2006 against France to make an impact on the team. He came with the biggest Grand Slam result of his career to Davis Cup, and could not prove it. And he also had some little issues with the team (not spending enough time with them, not appearing for a collective lunch or breakfast) which brought him bad news again. I'm sure some of you remember it. This was a huge blow, I think.

Kiwi really needs to continue like that. If he rises up in the rankings even more, it will be almost impossible for Kühnen to give reasons like this one.

at least he seems to be a little surprised by the great support Kiwi got from fans and media already. If Berrer or Mayer will lose their match against Lee or even better against the Korean No 2 Kühnen will get a lot more critics than he already got. I want Germany to win but two wins from Kohli and the double is enough :) I am cheering for a 3:2! And I will wear my Kiwi-Shirt in Braunschweig!!

Obviously it wasn't too risky for Kühnen to nominate Waske against Russia when it was clear that Waske was in big injury trouble the weeks before and even said things like "I wouldn't play if it wasn't for Daviscup". ;)

I wonder what Kühnen will do if Waske starts playing a few weeks before the Spain tie. Would it be too risky to nominate him then? The same goes for Haas.

Eurosport wrote today that Tommy might need another surgery on his shoulder so I don't think he will be an option for a 2nd round Davis Cup tie. So I am very much looking forward for Kühnen's next "reason" for not nominating Kiwi... This would be really funny if the Davis Cup wouldn't mean that much to Kiwi

#93 ·
I hope this thread won't be too quiet in the future because I still think that Kühnen is unpredictable and if you heard the interviews almost nobody was talking about Kiwi, but they were emphasizing how well Kohlschreiber played and lead the team and how great this performance of Tommy was against Croatia. I think Kühnen said something like: "We need Tommy in that form and to win matches like against Croatia where he beat two top10 players if we want to have a chance against Spain".

My conclusion is: If Tommy is without problems the tournaments before the tie against Spain, the door is shut for Kiwi against Spain in singles.

sport1.de wrote " If Haas is fit Kiefer is out" and there were some quotes from Kühnen that showed that he has problems with Kiwi...

http://www.sport1.de/de/sport/artikel_2169050.html

I doubt that Kiwi will play against Spain. Kühnen doesn`t like him and he is just not professional enough to nominate someone against his personal preferences. I wouldn't blame Kiwi if he wouldn`t want to play anymore after this. But he has to say he wants to play because it is part of the Olympia qualification. Only players who make themselves available for Davis Cup are allowed to play Olympia.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Waske still can't play, which would make room for Kiefer. Not only as a doubles partner for Petzschner, but also as a possible singles player on Sunday. Mayer and Berrer should be out of the question, if Kiefer has decent runs in IW and Miami.
Though I don't know what Kuehnen is thinking about Kohlmann.

#97 ·
Yes, would be a great option, too, because such a well-working doubles team means something. Only risk is that Kas doesn't have the Davis Cup experience.

But against Spain, Kühnen needs a true and only doubles team that the singles players can rest on Saturday.

This line is totally out of place. :retard: They won 3-2 when we thought the worst possible outcome would be 4-1, and the conclusion of sport1 is that the nomination was right?

#99 ·
That's really a crap line which is inserted of probably a Kiwi-disliking writer here because the following quote does not have to do with Kiefer or the surface in any way.

They could just as well write or insert any name:

Nadal about the German team: they have Florian Mayer who is playing very good and Philipp Kohlschreiber who is playing good at the moment.

did he have a joint before that interview??? Mayer in good shape???? Ok... if he thinks Mayer is good he will be surprised by Kiwi!

#101 ·
Sometimes it makes more sense to refrain from trying to praise your opponent, if you want to be taken seriously.

That sport1 quote is mean-spirited. I prefer the following Kohlschreiber quote from a newer sport1 article.
http://www.sport1.de/de/sport/artikel_2169050.html

--> "It would be nice if Tommy and Nicolas Kiefer were in top shape, so that Patrik has free choice."

OMG :banghead: I had to :haha: as I read this Nadal comment that Mayer is playing very well :spit:

I hope for Nadal that this was lost in translation or due to his bad English maybe, or that it is a comment from 2004 or 2005. Otherwise I would seriously question his judgement... come on, Mayer is currently struggling to win any match even on a Challenger

ok time to restart this topic!! Since the last Davis Cup Kohli lost 3 times in first round and reached 3rd round in Indian Wells after a bye in 1st round! Tommy played very well in Indian Wells... much better than Kohli... but he is sick...will he be fit in time? Zverev, Berrer and Schüttler were just bad lately. Becker had problems with his shoulder but this seems to be ok now. He played an ok quali, won the first round in Miami and nobody can blame him for losing to Nadal... and Kiwi?? He played bad in Las Vegas and Indian Wells but yesterday's match was just amazing and since all the others are not better than him I think he should have a good chance to get nominated!! :worship: Kühnen even praised his game yesterday!!
