Re: The European Swing... back on clay

I saw a bit of his doubles on bwin. He got a warning for ball abuse in the match tb after hitting a df. They won 57 60 10/8 and came back from 14**.

Re: The European Swing... back on clay

Does someone know why Kiwi didn't play his matches today (single and douple)in Gstaad?
so G. Garcia-Lopez won the single and A. Seppi (ITA) / S. Vagnozzi (ITA) the douple form today!!!

I wish he would stop withdrawing for so little reasons all the time.

Re: The European Swing... back on clay

well is a sprained ankle 4 weeks before the Olympics and 2 weeks before a MasterSeries such a little reason?? I am sure he'd kill himself if he would play now and cause a more serious injury which would stop him from playing the Olymics....

GSTAAD, Switzerland (AFP) - German sixth seed Nicolas Kiefer dealt the Gstaad Open another blow on Thursday when he became the second player in two days to hobble out of the tournament.

The 31-year-old, who was suffering from a foot injury, had only recently recovered after missing a year from with a wrist injury which required surgery.

On Wednesday, number eight seed Guillermo Canas of Argentina went into the second round without hitting a ball when Belgian Kristof Vliegen pulled out ill.

Kiefer hurt himself in a doubles match but waited until the last minute before handing a place in the quarter-finals to Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

"I'm enjoying my tennis and doing everything I can to win," said the veteran who lost in third round of Wimbledon to Rafael Nadal.

"The most important thing is to wake up healthy, give 100 percent and enjoy your game."

The German was playing Gstaad for the first time since 2000 after competing in the alpine venue in 1997 and 1998 and reaching a pair of quarter-final spots.

The 88th-ranked Garcia-Lopez goes through with his 15th win of the season and faces Russian third seed Mikhail Youzhny who defeated Flavio Cipolla of Italy 6-3, 6-2.

Another seed went out on the fast clay courts at 800-metre altitude with Romanian Victor Hanescu winning a two-and-a-half-hour battle over number four Ivo Karlovic 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (13/11).

Despite 28 aces from the towering Croatian in a match where all five break points went for nought, number 80 Hanescu, playing the event for the first time in four years, reached the last eight.

There he will face rising French youngster Jeremy Chardy, who overcame German Dominik Meffert 6-7 (1/7), 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4) in another marathon in just under three hours.

Number 103 Chardy made a surprise run to the fourth round at Roland Garros, defeating seventh seed David Nalbandian en route.

"I'm not so surprised to have done well today," said Chardy. "The altitude makes things a lot different on the clay.

"But this match cannot compare to my time at Roland Garros. There the crowd encouraged me in every match, it was just incredible. That will be one of the highlights of my career."

Kiefer vs Blake should be a nice match. I expect a win here.

Re: The European Swing... next stop Basel

yes I think he should wear a "I love Toronto"-shirt on court lol If the doubles matches in Madrid helped him to get back on track again I am sure he can beat James but there were for sure easier first round opponents to choose from... well but still better than Federer or Del Potro

and another Kiwi-Tomas double

(1) NESTOR, Daniel CAN/ZIMONJIC, Nenad SRB v BERDYCH, Tomas CZE/KIEFER, Nicolas GER
PETZSCHNER, Philipp GER/PEYA, Alexander AUT v NALBANDIAN, David ARG/SCHWANK, Eduardo ARG

(3) DLOUHY, Lukas CZE/PAES, Leander IND v MELZER, Jurgen AUT/PERRY, Todd AUS
(WC) ALLEGRO, Yves SUI/SCHERRER, Jean-Claude SUI v KAS, Christopher GER/KOHLSCHREIBER, Philipp GER

BLAKE, James USA/REYNOLDS, Bobby USA v (WC) LAMMER, Michael SUI/SADECKY, Alexander SUI
ACASUSO, Jose ARG/CALLERI, Agustin ARG v (4) FYRSTENBERG, Mariusz POL/MATKOWSKI, Marcin POL

HERNANDEZ, Oscar ESP/MONTANES, Albert ESP v KERR, Jordan AUS/NIEMINEN, Jarkko FIN

He got one of his rare good doubles wins. 64 76 over Nestor/Zimonjic.

Re: The European Swing... next stop Basel

Kiwi started the match with a foot fault, so already after 3 seconds this linesman got his first angry look from Kiwi.

Re: The European Swing... next stop Basel

Against Blake I only saw the first set and expected him to win from there.

Nalbandian/Schwank d. Berdych/Kiefer 6-3 6-4

In this match I saw the second set and I must say that Berdych looked like the much better player. There is a reason why Kiwi doesn't win much in doubles.
