I have lots of "insider" info on this:
1) Even though Fed is no.1 player who is a delight to watch, Thai people have seen him two years in a row already. So it's hardly exciting anymore for them to come and see him.
2) Fed's style is graceful, no doubt about it. But in smaller tournament where there is practically no other charismatic player to match him until the final, it's become VERY boring to just watch him basically do nothing much and win a match. I remember very well last year I was watching the match between Fed and Jarkko with one of the chief organizers. He turned around and asked me "do you think this is boring? I do."
3) When Fed is here, people already knew he would win the title, so the unpredictability is gone.
So it all comes down to the fact that Thai people are barely excited with Fed anymore. So it doesn't seem worth it marketing-wise anymore to spend 400,000 US Dollars on his appearance fee. If the tournament still wanna keep him, the only way they can make the tournament exciting is to also hire Rafa, Marat, Hewitt ...etc. Now how much the appearance fee are going to cost over all?
The other big problem the organizers have with Fed would be Mirka.... say no more.
