Here's a missing piece of the "I'm not gay" moment. @ 1:56, the audio cuts in with him saying "... somebody like me, or any other tennis player. So she has to do lot of sacrifices and not many girls are willing to do it." It's here that Andre comes in with "you're trying to tell us you're gay, right?"
@ 0:46 Marat is seen rubbing his knee and wincing after getting into the car, but apparently in the press conference he said he was OK.
@ 1:40 Andre gets his own back against Marat. I think things are OK between them now.
If this is true, we've found a flaw at last.
That really is
...at least it was his right knee....must have hit it on the door while he was being manhandled into the car.....
as for Andre's comments.....he has come across as a bit of a self-obsessed ass in his press so far on this tour, to my mind - although I don't really think Marat was all that phased or embarrassed by his comments - and his response was pretty much what you would expect - it's not the first time there have been "gay" rumours - there was yellow press trash way back - as were reports that there was porn on his phone - and I guess that can be interpreted as "normal" or a "flaw" according to your own opinion...
Even before Andre's ambush of sorts, he had demonstrated his tastelessness with that "I'll show you a photo of my wife - naked" - if I was Steffi I'd punch his lights out for that - anyways - even if he were gay, he's hardly likely to 'come out' in such circumstances - in fact, given the homophobia that is still rife he's hardly likely to 'come out' at all....(anyone interested there's a lot of discussion on the net about the fact that there are no 'out' tennis players - male ones, of course - somehow being a lesbian tennis player has some kudos these days...anyhow - I digress...)
What Marat was expressing in the rest of his comments about relationships is simply his independence, his "self-containedness" which is so characteristic of him - sure, his life experience has made him self-sufficient and totally independent - or rather, his fundamental personality, (being a free- thinking Aquarian with a Gemini moon) was particularly suited to the travelling lifestyle afforded by his pro tennis career - and he has never really conformed to the classic pro-athlete stereotype - with the smoking, the 'partying' (for which you could read 'womanising')all of which was typically over-exaggerated - but this reputation has stuck to him whether he likes it or not - there are still people who see him as nothing more than a lothario who 'wasted' his tennis talent - and it seems to me that those people fundamentally just don't 'get' Marat - at all.
Seems to me the press created his reputation because his non-conformity made him a 'colourful' character and his 'heart on the sleeve' behavior on court was merely enhanced by his off-court personality and charisma - his unpredictability made him perfect fodder and easy to write about - made all the more compelling by his physical beauty - lets fact it - he seems to 'have it all'..... and yet it seems to me that Marat himself is totally removed from the 'public' version of himself - for the most part he lets it ride and hides himself behind it - but if you listened carefully enough, there have been plenty of times when his irritation at the assumptions people make about him, at the implied trivializing of him as a professional came out - particularly in his final year....
Seems to me there is nothing about Marat that makes him suited to monogamy - in any aspect of his life, and therefore it's no surprise that even though he has tried 'settling' down in Moscow en-route to a life as one of the tennis establishment, he has re-discovered his travelling tennis life....modified to suit his own personal desires ...- and isn't it SO GOOD for all of us who love him to see him really having fun and being happy - single, gay, OR straight ???
